Hello all,

I will be holidaying in the U.K. and Ireland later in the year, and if I can organise it properly, I should stumble across a motor racing circuit on the day a motor racing event is being held (I didn't know honey, honest! :) ).

The question is, a lot of circuits are visible only through high catch fencing these days (stupid OH&S), which makes photographs difficult to take.

So which circuits are spectator friendly in this regard? It doesn't matter how big or small the event is.

If you are visiting Kent you could do a lot worse than Lydden Hill near Dover, you can see the whole track from virtually any spectator position or of course Brands Hatch, whilst there is catch fencing there are several good photo ops (inside Druids for example) without fencing in the way.

Goodwood. Unfortunately you can't "just turn up" for the Revival though as it's all-ticket. But it's a great day (or weekend) out! Even for the Missus.

For getting close to the cars I'd recommend hillclimbs - especially Shelsley Walsh and Prescott.

Most of the British circuits are old tracks so they appear to be more spectator friendly anyway. Silverstone is the best for getting very close to the action when I compare it to other F1 tracks on the calendar. Theres none of these grandstands which are 150 yards the opposite side of a run off area, like we see in Bahrain and Turkey etc.

Heres whats coming up at Silverstone

Snetterton. It's fantastically spectator friendly.

Even though it's much more basic than the big tracks in terms of facilities, I choose to go there instead.

Go to Anglesey circuit if you can, atmosphere is really relaxed, just get a ticket for a tenner on the way and you can go pretty much anywhere within reason

I love Goodwood Festival of Speed, last year I took about 2000 photos in just one day... :drunk:

Spa is a good place, I have been there. Nice high hills were you can stand on and make pictures ( it's hard to do it though, because these cars move fast :p )

Monza is very difficult, unless your in the grandstand.

Nurburgring has some nice spots if you find them.

The rest of the tracks I can't tell, cause I only visited these 3 tracks for F1 races :p

Donington and Brands are the best for seeing over catch fences due to the undulation of the land, alot of the track is in the bottom of a valley. Unless you can get grandstand seats at Silverstone its a poor track for seeing the track well in my experience.

i went to castle combe last weekend, theres some places without catch fencing and close to the track :)

the irish road racing is where you will get closest, bikes and sidecars only (think 1960's f1, but on public roads...), tickets will be cheap aswell

As well as Lydden, Mallory Park (Leicestershire) and Cadwell Park (Lincolnshire) are the UK circuits where spectators can get closest to the track and there is not much debris fencing. Neither has any big meetings these days, unfortunately.

Thanks for all your replies. All I have to do is combine it with an airshow and a good holiday will be had.

Oh yeah, I'll look at scenery and old buildings and stuff as well (to keep the peace).
