Some of you may have read eleswhere that I was due to take part in a track day event at Goodwood on 1 May. Unfortunately, the best laid plans "oft gang aglay" as they say. I duly tarvelled down to Goodwood in my Caterham 7 for an 8.0 a.m. inspection and promptly failed the noise level test! Damn. They would not let me out on the track. It was a bit galling as sundry Morgans, Porsche 911's, Ferrari's etc. passed. My Seven was clocked at 106 decibels at 6,000 rpm. The noise limit at Goodwood is 98db. I wasn't the only failure, a Westfield 8, Ferrari 312BB and a AC Cobra also failed. In fact, the Cobra was exceeding the limit on idle.
Ah well, down but not out. I will get my exhaust sorted in time for the next track day which is in August.
Ray, the chicane is represented by cones for track days, and none of the grandstands are in place either.

Shame you didn't get a chance to scatter them!
Surely a Westfield 8 is the ultimate in wicked devices?

"What a terrible way to win."
"Cher mademoiselle, there is no terrible way to win. There is only winning."

I also don't like the idea of silent race cars, but what's the option? Silent cars at Goodwood or no Goodwood at all! Make your choice.

The noise limits are waived completely for the two big events held at Goodwood, The Festival of Speed and the Circuit Revival. I don't think a BRM V16 would have any trouble exceeding 98db at maximum revs. The limits are in place for track days and club/corporate events held during the remainder of the year.
The monitoring system they have is probably the most complicated and thorough anywhere. There are three microphones staioned around the track linked to a central computer which lives in the pit manager's office (known as "Ted's Shed"). A computer display shows a map of the track with a constantly updated readout of maximum db's reached as a car passes each sensor. This information is transmitted directly via a radio link to Chichester Council Offices where the data is stored for future review. If any cars exceed the set levels on any of these track days etc. Goodwood will be called up to explain themselves to Chichester Council. "Big Brother" in action or what?

With big brother having a setup like that, you can certainly understand them turning away noisy cars... You'd have to be real careful!
And no running over hares and damaging mufflers!
