Hi!
It never ran in F1. In the late 70s/early
80s the 240 appeared in hillclimb events,
I believe. Who raced the car?
March 240 six-wheeler

I've seen a picture of that car on the web somewhere. The real mystery six-wheeler is the Ferrari 312 F1 six-wheeler.

You've probably seen them at 8W. Here's the March:
And here's the Ferrari at Fiorano:

I actually hadn't seen either of those photos before. Thank you kindly.

I personally think the March/Williams setup could have been made to work. Aerodynamically it was smarter than the Tyrrell idea, and the tyres were easier come by.

Actually the March setup was like totally faked, it was only a ploy to try and lure a new sponsour.
If I recall correctly the second pair of rear wheels wasnt even powered (The second transaxle was just a 'dummy' emty casing).
The March (Based on a 1973 F3 March) was notorious for excessive and virtually un-curable understear. (Fuel was stored too far forward ?) Adding a second set of rear wheels would not have helped this team.

The March six wheeler was quite successfully campaigned by Roy Lane in the british Hillclimb championship. Roy also used a McCrae GM1 to good effect, and I beleive is still hillclimbing now.
I agree with the sentiment that it was aerodynamically a better answer than the P34, but mechanical drag wise and weight wise there were disadvantages. Interestingly, its mai advantage in Hillclimbing was traction, i understand, and was untouchable in the wet.
