Hello!

I got two questions related to 1980 F1 season...

1. What was radius and width of the front/rear wheels used in 1980 season? Any information about the wheelbase and track of the cars?
2. I got a few photos of Ligier JS11 (1979) and Ligier JS11/15 (1980). The engine is covered only on JS11/15, right? But what about that break on sidepod sides? Photos are showing JS11/15 without the break on the sidepods, but there is a clear break on the car´s blueprints. On the blueprint is also a version with big front wheels? There is also a change in top part. Also there is a change of the number colour- black-blue. Please if you know which versions were used, or if they were used, where were they driven (GP)?

You'll find a fair amount, but not comprehensive list, of information including chassis numbers and photo's of the JS 11 and JS11/15 here.

Some dimensions might be available in Autocourse Annuals covering the years concerned but I do not have copies for either year.

For the British GP 1980 I believe both Ligier and Williams teams raced with 15" wheels and I am fairly sure Williams also did a comparative test with 14" wheels in practice.

According to "The Complete History of Grand Prix Motor Racing", by Cimarosti, the 1980 Ligier JS 11/15 had a wheelbase of 2800, front track 1778, rear track 1608.

The following link to Allen Brown's website should help you determine which specific chassis were used and where:

You'll find some dimensions here; they were mostly taken from contemporary magazines and German F1 yearbooks. Dimensions of the JS11/15 are like Cimarosti's book.

Hi,
I can answere the questions about the Ligier.

Ligier basicly started the seasonwith the JS11 '79 car with engine cover and brake on the front of the sidepods.

Later the used the JS11/15 with sloped top body in front of the engine cover and brake on the front of the sidepods.

Later the used the JS11/15 with sloped top body in front of the engine cover and without brake on the front of the sidepods.

Well, to start with that is hardly a "blueprint", more likely a magazine sketch showing design features, and as such probably simply an oversight by the person doing the sketch. Secondly, I clearly remember the troubles Ligier had with the 13" front wheels at the French GP, where Jones and Williams beat them with 15" fronts despite the Ligiers showing more speed, so that's presumably why the cars were hastily modified for the British GP. Then, of course, they fell prey to faultily manufactured Gotti wheels at Brands... :(

Thanks to all of you! Really helped me much to create the car precisely. Last question which I would like to ask you about 1980´s Ligier is why the number 26 on the car has blue colour on some photos, while at others it is black coloured?

I remember that drawing. it appeared in a model making magazine in the early 80s, I think 'Scale Models'. Probably around the time that the Tamiya JS11 kit came out.

Despite a considerably less than perfect memory I have no recollection of and could find no evidence on the net of the JS 11 or 11/15 series racing with either of these blue #26 style numbers and suspect they might be due to inaccurate photo research during restoration.

I'd be interested to see any evidence to the contrary.
