I've always thought the first Simtek, the S941, was a very elegant-looking car.

For once, Life might be added among the top of the pile.

Is a second place regarded as unsuccessful? that Leyton House though, one of the prettiest cars ever!

I'm a Simtek kind of guy too, they were real lookers. On the other hand, who remembers the absolute pig of an El Charro backed AGS that Pascal Fabre tried to race, it had the dimensions of a supertanker......

Regarding post #6, when did a Life F1 finish second in a GP?

How much is down to the paint scheme - and how much down to the lines of the car? I don't know the answer. But I do think the yellow Camel livery didn't do the Lotus justice.
But the Jordan 191 scores well on both counts - sorry I don't know how to post pictures

I am not sure how much truth there is in the legend that Sir Frank Williams used to run his Formula One Team from a GPO Telephone Box nor when he upgraded to his own direct line, but I have always thought the Politoys, Iso Marlboro and Williams FW03, looked like they were conceived on a scrap heap and there are signs that a variety of parts, were borrowed from other contemporary vehicle designs.

However it's usually true that it's what you bring to the table not how good it looks that counts and this was perhaps never more true than with the FW03 #IR04 clunker that RAM Racing entered into the 1976 Italian GP for Loris Kessel but decided against running because of it's lack of competitiveness.

This very same FW03 #IR04 , chassis, in which Renzo Zorzi had made his F1 debut in 1975 coming in 14th, found it's way into the hands of Jolly Club Switzerland who transformed the car into the svelte Apollon which went on a wild upward swing in form from failing to show up at the 1977 Belgian GP, not permitted to practice for the French GP and finally crashing out of qualifying for the Italian GP recording a DNQ.

Unsuccessful yes but none the less appealing to the eye.

Good point D Type - my favourite ever car is the JPS Lotus 72 - stunning! however in gold leaf colours I do not think it looks as nice or as stunning. Always thought the William's colour scheme of the late 80's early 90's looked great but as soon as it got Rothmans paint on it, the car looked awful.

Here is another attractive 'unsuccessful' F1 car Mo Nunn's first F1 Ensign at the 1973 French GP, where it's best result was 13th unfortunately the all enclosing body work was ditched as the season progressed.

Just what I thought and posted after I had photographed the car a few miles away from where I live
