Not sure how many could have been taped live. A friend of mine had a home videorecorder in 1979 (I bought my first one in January 1982), so I doubt that many fans, if any, could have recorded races prior to 1979.

However, look out for a documentary film (available on VHS at one time) called If You're Not Winning, You're Not Trying, which follows the JPS Lotus team throughtout the 1973 season. It's very interesting, especially when Colin Chapman criticises March driver Jean-Pierre Jarier for spreading gravel on the starting grid at one GP!

There is a video available (probably from Duke) called "The Seventies" and it is a season by season review of the decade. It lacks a little by modern standards because the races were not as widely televised I suspect. However, it is still quite good. It is part of a series (60's, 70's, 80's). Usually Speedgear has them in their catalog or you could visit Duke Video's website. Sorry I don't have the address at hand but it should be easy to search.

This may not be not exactly what you're looking for, but you could try to get hold of an Al Pacino film, called "Bobby Deerfield" Pacino plays a race driver for the "Brahma" (really Brabham) team, and uses a great deal of race footage from about 78.

There's a fair bit of racecar action in it, and also some great scenes with Pacino driving an Alfa 2000GTV.

The film itself is nothing special if this makes any difference....

It was released on VHS but may be pretty hard to find now.

Emlyn -

Have you managed the black art of transfering these tapes to VHS format yet ?
