Good Evening Ladies and Germs,

Legend has it that there is a photo of Bernie Ecclestone carrying Jochen Rindt's helmet (in the pitlane/paddock?) after the fateful incident at Monza in 1970. A few F1 people have confirmed this photo sounds familiar but they are not sure where they've seen it or who took it and owns the copyright.

Here's hoping the subsequent conversation will jog some memories.

Thanks

Interesting. Once, when I worked for "the wee one", I was out on the circuit, at Monza, at the start of the start/finish straight with 'Tash, Jochen's daughter, and Bernie's god-daughter. I caught her looking back over her shoulder at Parabolica, and then she saw I had seen her do so. She said that it was the closest she had been. Later a "reporter" (British newspaper), saw 'Tash, and seeing her her surname said, "wasn't there a driver called Rindt? What's he doing now?" (!!!!) I was later reporting to BCE on something else (track audio I think) and mentioned these two events. He said, "No, I have never been out there either, and when I heard what had happened went straight to the first aid area, and left in the ambulance". He also sent Herbie Blash, just in his twenties, to see Nina (in Jochen's car I believe) and sent someone else to get Jochen's things, to paraphrase, "not the overalls, which were at the hospital or the helmet, which had been removed at the scene and had not come back with him".

The upshot would be, either this picture was actually Spain 1969 (which I am sure I have seen), or much later after the event than thought. I know 'Tash has a couple of her dad's helmets, including a white Bell, but I amsure the helmet used in Monza was plain white, whereas 'Tash's one has "Rindt" on it in tape.

Ross, upon reading your post, I knew exactly what photo you were talking about, as it really moved me when I saw it in a German book that was published last year. It is a black-and-white photograph, showing Bernie from the back with the helmet (white with a horizontal stripe) in his right hand and one racing boot in his left. It is on p. 125 of 'Jochen Rindt - der erste Popstar der Formel 1', published last year by Ferdi Kräling with most photographps taken by Ferdi and text witten by Austrian author, Herbert Völker.

This photo, however, has been taken from Helmut Zwickl's book 'Jochen Rindt - Hinrichtung eines Champions' which was published in 1970, pretty soon after the accident. Unfortunately, this is the only German-language Rindt book I don't have in my collection, so I can't tell you who shot it. However, I suppose Bildagentur Kräling will be able to help you.

Seems Jochen was wearing the same helmet at Zandvoort, Zeltweg and Monza.

Looks like some one else must have returned Jochen's helmet to his family if it was not BCE.
