Does anyone know the weight of the Crankshaft in a F-1 V-10 engine ? I have read that the Crankshaft in a NASCAR V-8 weighs about 50 lbs, I would assume that F-1 Crankshaft weighs alot less.

I'd agree... only two extra journals and webs, but shorter stroke by a big margin... has to be.

Come on Desmo, you had a photo of an F1 crank...... how heavy?? Don't be coy or evasive, lets have an exact figure

You actualy have a F1 crank in your possesion? Or are you just pulling our legs?

BTW ou could use the "dog-wheighing"-trick to bring the scale into its proper range.

What engine is this bathroom crank from? Why do you have a crank in the bathroom? 20lbs (9kgs) seems incredibly light though. I'd like to see that (but not in your bathroom)

I'd say 20lbs less than the V8 crank is a bit more than I'd expect... more likely 10 to 15lbs difference.

Here is the image of an F1 crankshaft I posted in another thread. Figure the stroke is around 45mm for scale, and take your best guess how much this hunk of steel might weigh. I think we are zeroing in on the correct neighborhood here.

About 20 lbs.

I guessed from what desmo said about stroke, and making some crude estimates about sizes from the photo, and about counterweight shape (rectangle).

5 crankpins: 35mm diameter x 40mm long
6 mains: 45mm diameter x 35mm long
10 webs / weights: 130 x 50 x 12
I guessed the big bit on the end weighs the same as the internal drillings.
Density of steel: 7.9g / cm^3

About 10 kgs / 20 lbs. Incredible (the crankshaft, not me)

Here is a link to an image showing some steps in the manufacture of a crank using stock removal as modern F1 cranks are apparently made:

And here's a link to the site which is interesting:

These people make cranks for F1, check out the video:
