IndyCar ratings: Numbers for 2010 season slightly up for Versus
Sports Media Watch | July 28, 2010 7:01 a.m.
"The numbers may not be very large, but viewership has increased by nearly a quarter for the IndyCar Series on Versus," Sports Media Watch writes, adding, "Through five races, Versus is averaging 428,000 viewers for IndyCar races, up 24 percent from last year (345,000), the network's first year airing coverage. To put the numbers in perspective, the 428,000 viewers for IndyCar races on Versus tops the regular season averages of the NHL on Versus (297,000), WNBA on ESPN2 (290,000) and MLS on ESPN2 (251,000)."
Nothing will change this year..or next as there is no changes until 2012. Unless someone has some magic wand..this is just what it has become. The same thing happened to the NHL..but viewership is increasing from near disastrous levels..
Indycar has become stagnant..but a 24% increase on a back marker (Versus) and topping MLS...on ESPN2..or NHL on Versus still shows there is interest. Increase at this rate next year and perhaps new rules may offer more..so..
I guess I'll watch and see what happens..

Motorsports insiders think the Brickyard 400’s declining fortunes will hasten the Hulman-George family’s decision on the future of the Indy Racing League, which the NASCAR race has helped subsidize.
IMS CEO Jeff Belskus, who replaced Tony George in June 2009, said the Brickyard 400 remains “very profitable.”
“It’s a strong event for us,” he said.
Few dispute that, but racing analysts now think the IRL’s losses exceed the Brickyard 400’s profit, and that could be a major rub for the board that controls the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and IRL.
belskus Belskus
[b]Since the IRL’s inception in 1996, the board, which is four-fifths Hulman-George family members, has used Brickyard 400 profits to support the open-wheel series. But now the Brickyard’s raging revenue stream has slowed considerably.
A feud among board members over money following the 2009 Indianapolis 500 led to the departure of former IMS and IRL boss Tony George. Now there’s speculation the diminished financial firepower of the Brickyard 400 could lead to other changes.
“The balance sheet is what led to Tony George’s ouster, so you know the balance sheet has [the board's] attention,” said Zak Brown, president of Just Marketing International, a local firm that represents some of the biggest sponsors in motorsports.
“All the money goes in the same bank account, and they’re writing a lot of checks for IndyCar. You have to believe they’ve set a firm amount on what they’re willing to spend on the open-wheel series.”
Most with knowledge of Speedway finances think that amount is directly related to what the Brickyard 400 generates in profit.
Belskus said the Brickyard 400 and IRL are “evaluated separately,” but, he added, “a healthy Indianapolis Motor Speedway is good for the Indy Racing League.”
The Indianapolis 500’s hefty profit is a big component of the track’s health, but the Speedway’s flagship race doesn’t throw off enough money to underwrite the IRL.
It’s not clear how the Brickyard’s diminished profit could affect the league and, by extension, the Indy 500.
“The problem is, now that Champ Car is gone, what’s the prospect for the Indianapolis 500 without the Indy Racing League?” said Larry DeGaris, director of academic sports marketing programs at the University of Indianapolis, who has conducted several studies for motorsports business enterprises. “It’s difficult to imagine they could just abandon the [IRL]. But who knows?”
IRL CEO Randy Bernard, who took his post on March 1, is hopeful the open-wheel series can break even in 2011 and reach profitability in 2012.
“I’d like to believe that, but it sounds optimistic,” said Tim Frost, president of Frost Motorsports, a Chicago-based motorsports business consultancy. “I like what Randy is doing, but he has a steep hill to climb.”
George, before his ouster, said the series must be profit

IndyCar has allowed 27 cars for this year's Mid-Ohio race. They had the rule of 26 but revised it to allow 27. This is good.
Bet that's so that if they have to ban Milka/pull her out of the race they've still got 26 good cars/drivers, rather than the usual 25 good cars/drivers and 1 that's been slower than a dead slug for the last few races at least.

Anyone want to lay bets on whether he'll be quicker than Milka

Wrong! In practice 2 he was nearly a second slower than Milka.

Its going to take a spectacular effort from Power if he manages not to take the overall title this year.
Brilliant result for Sato (I just hope he makes it to the chequered flag!), and Simona has really been showing her class in the past couple of races.
Hope you're having a good time despite Danica's qualifying DF, weather looks lovely over there!

Times were pretty close all through Q.

In a population of 200 million?Versus is averaging 428,000 viewers for IndyCar races[/url]
Does not seem very good for the top open-wheel racing in the land.
No wonder many teams have such small budgets that are perhaps, barely adequate to run the cars, let alone develop them and contend for titles.

Any why this did not occur to them to close IRL and go 100% CC/CART or merge properly earlier!?...

The IRL, as a package, was far stronger than Champ Car at the beginning of 2008. They had a TV deal, circuit contracts, spare chassis and engines, a budget. ChampCar had nothing. If they'd closed the IRL, the new ChampCar would have been forced to renegotiate all of those contracts that the IRL had as well as those that they were struggling to keep for themselves, Panoz would have been forced to magic new cars out of nowhere, probably at full price, and somehow make them run on ovals in the space of two months. It would have ben an utter disaster.

Don't remember where I got this photo, but it looks like the "original" Mid-Ohio layout...
(Copyright unknown)
I found that photo a couple of years ago when seeing the sections of old asphalt in the infield near Thunder Valley made me curious about the original layout. I also found some snippets of early track reviews which slated the track for being too tight and fiddly which is why they abandoned that loop into the infield and added the straight shot through the keyhole for pro events.

Rumour from Montreal is that Mt-Tremblant might be a fixture in the foreseeable IndyCar calendar. The race would be organized by the same group that handles the Canadian GP.
Hallelujah. We need more Canadian races, Mt Tremblant would be a welcome addition.
