Newey's been racing in the ginetta btcc support race today...just had quite a bad prang and still in the car....on itv 4 now...

edit: he was spun out by another car and then collected by another car behind, looks like hopefully just winded but trackside medics on scene...

race has been red flagged and he's still in the car 5 minutes later...

His car was t-boned which is a hefty impact but I can't see how he'd be seriously injured from it, I'm thinking a touch of whiplash/back/winded

I've seen on Twitter that a few people are worried at how long he has been in the car. Hope he is OK.

Fingers crossed that he's going to be fine. But what was he doing? Lining up to replace Webber?

He's doing his hobby, he has raced many times before. People who work in F1 do have a life outside it you know. ;)

Hardly a T-bone, just a fairly hefty hit in the back panel.

Did you see Newey's spoiler flexing before the first impact? :D

In all seriousness I hope, and am sure, he is OK.

Jesus, what an amateur. That crash was completely avoidable had he, you know, used the brakes as he was spinning instead of rolling back into the racing line.

Didn't look bad at all to be honest, pretty cool way to spend your summer break though.

Accident avoidance skills slightly above that of someone who is in their first race weekend.

There wasn't much to be done in that spin.

Yeah, there was. Basic racing stuff. Like not rolling back into the racing line. If you spin, both feet in. Brake and clutch. Keeps the engine alive and you from being run over by following cars.

Not a good weekend for him really, he already had his license endorsed for causing an accident in yesterdays race.

To be fair to him I've seen people who race a lot more than him rolling straight across the racing line during the coverage today.

Maybe for the professional driver who is able to think his way through the accident, but you're being way too harsh on Adrian, who is only doing this for fun.

Newey has raced loads of times before, he's not a novice. I'm sure the guy in the number 20 who just lost a load of money due to the heavy damage on his car won't think Ross was being too harsh.

Actually, the ultra-pros like Senna would have thrown it into reverse to get the hell out of the way. Watch @ 2:08:

If one can't think in that manner they shouldn't chose motor sport as a way of having fun!

As soon as he's released from hospital, Horner and Marko are going to cart him off in an armoured van and lock him in a cage. No way their technical genius will be allowed free will again :p

He totalled his Ford GT40 a few years ago participating at Le Mans. He also participated in the Silverstone Classic event not so long ago and wasn't too shabby, giving Chris Buncombe a run for his money.

I tend to agree, he should have kept his foot on the brake. He probably would not have got hit then. Really the first thing you should know when racing. Though I have seen big timers do it too in F1 Nascar V8 Supercars so he is not alone in a basic mistake. Though he was turned around.

Party Adrians fault I agree. I wouldve definintely mashed the brake there to make my trajectory more predictable for the guys behind.

I agree but notice how none of those saves were from the post 97 track reduction rules when the cars went from 2000mm wide to 1800mm wide? With the cars having a longer WB to track ratio slides are alot harder to catch and recover from these days. Id like to see the cars go back to 2000mm, they were much more fun to watch and looked more in proportion, the McLaren looks horribly long and narrow this year. To offset the extra performance gained they could just make the wings frontal area half what it is now so no reduction in advertising space but with less downforce.

I thought he had promised the owner he was not going to race ...

Perhaps this is a cunning way of having the factory opened up during the holiday ... they are the ones who repair his cars. I suspect, that its a good way to rebuild a car, tax effectively. Buy a bad one, crash it, and get RBR to repair it, up to state of the art full restoration only better status. Quite a tax lurk perhaps. And in Australia, there is no capital gains tax for cars. If that is the case in the UK, that's quite a win win for Newey.

Of course, I presume he's fine. Really, give it up Adrian. Pleeeeease. F1 still needs your hand drawn inspirations.

Video on James Allen blog.

Hope Newey has not suffered any lasting damage, but certainly echo Ross's comments that it looks very avoidable to me.

Oh really?!

I assumed he wasn't because the hit didn't look too bad and thought that the reason for his hospitilization was perhaps a head/neck injury from the hit.

Call me cynical but I always thought the reason he threw it into reverse in that clip was to collect Mansell.
