McLaren mp4/15 and 16 (without TC) Mercedes HOWWWWWWWWWL as they ran their exhausts very close together through the diffuser it had a very distinct and high pitched scream. God i miss it!

Agreed, right up there with the '89-'95 Ferrari V12s and the Matras.

Love this vid of Hockenheim, you can't see the cars but you can just tell by the sound when the Mclaren comes past, it is so distinct. Makes me miss V10s...

Senna in the '91 Mclaren with the V12 Honda and its very distinctive note. Some engines sound like animals shrieking at high pitches, this has a very metallic, mechanical sort of noise, nothing organic about it but it's still lovely. Also just a great lap to watch...
This was his competition, the Ferrari-
The later V12s sounded even more musical, the '92-'93 cars were IMO the best.

Still, the Ferrari V12 of 1994 through the woods of Hockenheim or Monza....orgastic.

Ow, and the Ford DFV of the end of the 60s/erly 70's. Defines classic racing for me.

Ok, it was loud...

Same race, stood at the exit of the swiming pool complex. The armco and layout muffled the sounds of the approaching cars somewhat, but as they came into view (heading straight for you if you are on the outside of the exit) they gave of this weird dopplar artilery shell sort of noise. It really was awesome.
And not seen/heard in person, but I gather being at the end of the first long straight at the old Hocklenheim used to be special. As the cars accelerated up to top speed, all together in one pack, the screaming and dopplar shift was a unique sound.

On the whole though I too prefer the manly bass sounds to high pitch screamers.
All time favourite engine sound is Porsche's flat 12 from the 917.
