Hey!

So, I have been taking racing games more and more seriously these days and I am looking a good racing sim. I have a few questions.

I have played F1 2010 quite a lot lately ( Rank 31 ) but it is on the Xbox 360 and not very happy with the "quality of driving" by other XBL people. I like to be precise and clean and 2010 is like a destruction derby with ridiculous penalties ( and non-penalties ).

Anyway,

So what I was thinking about is the following options:

1) PC - based sim with a descent steering wheel. I tried of LFS but Im not sure how the multiplayer would be since demo is only training and SP. Wait for rFactor 2 ?

2) PS3 - Grand Turismo 5. Can it be classified as a racing sim? Will it be as bad ( fellow drivers ) as F1 2010 ?

3) Xbox 360 - I am getting more and more averse of this platform everyday. Pretty sure wont be buying a MS console ever again!

My main disadvantage is that I am in India, which means that my ping would be 150 to 200 ms most of the time. Is this good enough for "serious" online racing ?

Thanks for answering in advance :)

2) What comes on multiplayer, GT5 prologue "fellow drivers" are not doing anything than trolling on track. There was even more fair racing in Grand Theft Auto IV multiplayer race events. I don't know what kind of multiplayer system GT5 will have, but I'm sure problems remains if there's no option to have private lobbies with invites only and passwords.

I would say, wait for rFactor 2. Should be out within a few months. If you're not planning on waiting that long, give rFactor 1 a go anyway, although to buy it now wouldn't be really worth it I'm afraid. Unless they've some certain 'if you bought rFactor 1 in the last 3 months you get a rFactor 2 code for free'-rule which to be honest, I have no clue about.

Another option is iRacing, but if you care about your money you shouldn't go that way.

EDIT: And anyway, if you want to race fair without noobs wrecking your race, join a league. You won't find any game where you can simply drive an unorganized race that all goes fair and square. Plenty of leagues out there for the rFactor series.

Yeah, personally I find that's the main issue with right about every racing sim out there - but if you can bother with leagues you'll find nice, fair racing there. The only sim where that's not a problem is iRacing because there's a system that penalizes people for crashing, but like you said, it's a far more expensive option.

Thanks for the quick replies

I think i will wait for rFactor2 in that case, may give GT5 a run around on someone's PS3 when its out.

Anyone has idea regarding any issues because of high ping ( 150 - 200 ms ) in online races?

ALSO: it would be nice if there was an Autosport league methinks :)

If you are after 'serious' online racing then give iRacing a go. You can get a $5 1 month trial.

And I don't think its expensive.

Joining something like iRacing would be a good idea. But, for me maybe a little later.

Buy netKar Pro, as that is the most realistic driving simulator at the moment. The only downside is that there is very little action on public servers online. Join one of the 3,4 popular league's, and you'll get every little racing kick you need :).

LFS is also very enjoyable for me. There are some servers where the standard of driving is ok. At others it's just a wreckfest. Physics and tiremodel are pretty good. It's lacking some updates lately to keep in touch with iRacing & netKar Pro

rFactor is too fragmented I think. Too many mods, different versions of the same tracks... I couldn't keep track of it. On top of it the tire model is not very good, which doesn't give you the feeling you are driving something realistic.

iRacing is problaby the best solution, if you bank account can handle it. The best tracks by far, good physics, with some problems with the current tiremodel. When I had the cash it was perfect for me. Pick up racingstyle all day long, with perfect quality. 19 out of 20 drivers behaved themselves. Close racing with people you have never seen before was quite the experience. As soon as I have a job I'll problalby resubscribe.

To sum up: if you want cheap online realistic quality racing, go for netKar Pro.
+ Extremely good physics/tire model. Gives you the most realistic driving sensation (including flatspots, dirt on tires with lose of grip etc).
- Little online activity on public servers.

LFS + Much online activity, very pick-up racing orientated. Acceptable physics etc.
-Can sometimes be wreckfest. No updates in last couple of months.

rFactor+ Extreme amount of choice for cars & Tracks, many leagues.
-Physics not good enough, pick up racing can vary greatly. To fragmented due to all the mods.

iRacing+ Outstanding tracks, Very good physics. Quality of online racing is extremely good.
-PRICE. Online structure doesn't suit everyone.

rF isn't on par with iRacing in terms of physics (can't talk much about netKar and LFS as my experience there is limited), but I don't think the base tyre model itself is wrong. It's just that the vast majority of mods don't do it right.

The great thing about rF is that you have available for you right about every track ever made, and most of the cars that you can think of. That's always fun even if just to try them out and do a few hotlaps. For 30 euro (or whatever's the price nowadays), it's a steal, one of the best buys I've ever done as it kept me busy in terms of games for some 2 years. Then again right now it might be worth waiting for rF2, but rF2 will take a while until there's a decent choice of cars and tracks.

Release of rF2 probably won't happen before Christmas.

Is rFactor 2 still on schedule to be under our 2010 Christmas tree?

Gjon: I’m predicting less than a 48% chance. We still have much work to do, but let's see.

I think it's safe to assume that top modding groups won't release F1 mod until at least mid 2011.

If you have a high ping you can expect lag in your games but may be it is corrected either by the console or PC games developers or by the servers, I don't know. I remember GTA4 on PS3 was a bit of a pain for that reason at the beginning. Then I noticed less laggy connections.

First thing would be to be objective in your choice. Why do you disregard the Xbox so much? As far as I know it's a good console. Also if you believe that F1 2010 is that bad than you should forget about any console racing game, or perhaps just buy a PS2 and play Gran Turismo 3. If you get a slim console and should you be lucky enough to find a network access disk you could even experiment on-line gaming at a ridiculous cost.

I don't know about PC games. I had few 10 years ago running with Windows 98. They were already running better than the OS. First of all get a good PC, that's essentially a fast processor and a good graphics card with a power supply that can handle the whole thing. If you are rich you can buy your own server and organize an Indian championship.

The two sims the guys talk a lot about are iRacing and rFactor. For what I can read they are both quite good. You will need a G27 or a GT steering wheel.

Budget console should be one third of the amount you'll need for a PC. But the most important thing you have to decide is what type of racing you would like to do.
I had great fun with GTA muscle car, since a little shoving doesn't hurt. I guess that Nascar on GT5 (if it is ever released) will be fun. As The Kanisteri says very well you won't find the trolls where you think they are.

Xbox live can be full of #####s I know. But join some more forums and join in some arranged serious races with like minded people, live is unbeatable on a good night.

I still like Forza 2 on the 360. You can run it with multiple monitors which is nice and less collisions (but need more xbox's to process, cheap as chips now though)

Grand Turismo 5 racing sim? who cares? theyre all just games IMO and the best so-called sims get boring quickly if youre too aware of whats missing. Im from a karting background, caught the bug big time and my best game experiences have probably always come from console racers(you need a good atmosphere, high frame rate and overall feel more than perfect physics IMO)

The 360 wheel can be modded (tightened up if it hasn't already)
