Hi,

Someone - I assume from the Nostalgia Forum - made an inquiry with regards to Les Moore.

We received the following e-mail reply:

Dear sir,

With reference to your query on Les Moore's death, he died in 1960 at Timaru.

Please advise me if you require any further details.

Shani Moore (Grand Daughter).

I don't know who this is supposed to be sent to. So if anyone here need Ms. Moore's e-mail address, please contact me.

Thanks,

Bira

Les Moore was Ronnie Moore's father and quite a successful driver (as, I am sure, Milan Fistonic will be able to tell you).

But who is Nigel Moores?

I can't remember who originally posted the Les Moore query, Bira, but I answered it two or three weeks ago with the date and place of his death. Probably on the 'ultimate price' thread.
Nigel Moores, Barry, was a very big player in UK historic racing in the early 1970s, owning GP and sports Maseratis and I think half a dozen or more D-type Jaguars (at the same time). He was heir to the Littlewoods football pools fortune, but was killed in a road accident, I think in France, I think about 1972.
His family was never in favour of his racing, so he frequently borrowed the name of his mechanic, Paul Kelly, to enter races, and also appeared as "Willie Eckerslyke".

Nigel Moores, 41, died in April 1977 when the Range Rover in which he was travelling left the road in the South of France.

I am sure that Dave McKinney can attest to this as well. In fact, didnt Les Moore break the lap record at the 1953 Tahuna beach meeting, driving a F3 Keift powered by a 1000 cc Vincent engine?;) Of course, this is just one example of his skills though.

Regards,
Kirk

The scary thing about the Kieft's engine was that it was supercharged - not something I'd fancy driving on the sand! Les was also very successful with the car on Canterbury grass-tracks for many years, as was Ronnie with his Cooper-Vincent.
Les Moore's main claim to fame though was as double winner (1951 and 1952) of the Lady Wigram Trophy, the most prestigious NZ race of the time.
