Renzo,
The car accident took place after the "First" Long Beach GP, which featured F5000 cars.
Chris and company were rear ended by a young Mexican trying to escape capture by the local police. Chris suffered crushed toes and missed the US GP at Watkins Glen in '75 where he would have driven the Ensign N175.
PS - I will be offline for the next four days as the Track team and I go off in search of glory at the Penn Relays !!
In keeping with the general situation .....

..... but back to Amon.
In looking over the last few posts, Chris and Lorenzo had some great days. It's a shame that the partnership didn't go on !!

Chris has genuine affection for Lorenzo.
It was one of the reasons he wanted to do well at well at Le Mans in '67 - they'd won at Daytona, Monza - Le Mans would have given them a nice hat-trick.
I think in the book there is a quote to the effect of 'wanting to do well for Lorenzo'.

Some years later during the '76 race, all the young lions are in awe as Chris shows how to get around the circuit in the underpowered Ensign !!

can be found scans of loads of Autosport sportscar race reports from 1963 to 1970; has it been mentioned before? Probably!

At work they call it "happy fingers". I did a search on "Iowa State Fair" and the post should have gone here because of a brief mention.

I would like to hear you story anyway !!
As for page one post 5, Amon at Spa 1970, Masta Kink flat out !!
In GPL, I still brake and pray !! I don't think anyone could get a 67 spec F1 car through the kink without lifting ??

To Capp things off, while watching "Grand Prix" for the "lord knows how many times, I stopped counting years ago." I wondered just how much unused film there is of Spa that year ??
I would love to get involved in a project to make a director's cut of the film. Just the reunion would be a blast !!
The spring cleaning of this thread is a very long process, (as is the thread itself), but certain other posters could help greatly by removing their own personal fluff. Un called for opinions being the top of the list !!

Rosey, I am not a "dude," have no concern about being "mellow," certainly not a "REMF," and I can't be too smart since I didn't lock this thread when I had the opportunity.

You're missing the point Don makes so well. Spaking for myself, I have always been one of the greatest Amon fans and certainly one of the first, having been impressed from the first events I saw him in, in 1960. Because of this I still open the thread at least twice a day in the hope of adding to my knowledge. It is increasingly annoying to have to read meaningless drivel every time - but my interest in the subject is still such that I have to keep looking. I suspect there are others like me.
Your attitude to one of the most respected names on TNF does you no credit. Nor does it advance your case (whatever that might be).

I have done my part in removing my fluff, but while Donald Capps refers to me as a narcissist, he leaves his own ego driven garbage on the thread !!
..... now correct me if I'm wrong here but, can the pot stop calling the kettle black and take some of his own advise ??
David,
Thanks for the daily visits. As someone who has followed the career of the "Golden Kiwi" for as long as you have, I would think you would have been one of the most profound of contributers !
For those with a less jaundiced eye,
When you read "THE" thread, you will marvel at the various conversations that have taken place over the five year period. Some of these conversations are just priceless in their own little way and have always added to the general expansion of knowledge.
I wouldn't delete a single Ray Bell retort or a ZippyD sexual comment in the interest of making this thread into somewhat of an expedia article on Amon. As I have said earlier, that is not the intent of the thread. That the thread has gone on this long is a byproduct of a lot of other people putting some great stuff here. Pedro917, Rob Ryder, Macca and others whose names escape me at the moment.
As for Rosey,

it was fun while it lasted, great fun, to be sure ... Not many books have been named after a definitely very busy and in that matter successful thread in an internet forum ...

... but surely the whole thing has become almost completely unnavigable by now: I simply do not have the time to move through all the other stuff I'm currently not interested, as useful as it may be, to find the info I'm just looking for -
In retrospective, I would think, it would have been much, much more useful - and nothing less entertaining - to have many, many threads on C.A. ...
- and his early years in NZ and Oz
- in F1
- racing minor Formula cars
- with Ferrari
- in big sports/CanAm cars
- at Le Mans
- with the girls
- and ... many more other topics ... yes, you name it ...
What's the point to accept that?
Please, stop quarreling, let's share stories and info!

Thank you, Keir...
Like David, I visit the thread regularly, though not as frequently as before. When the occasion arises I will again put something of substance into it. But there will have to be some trigger, as there has to be for Buford to get into his rollicking stories.
But I really don't think you've been following CA's career as long as David. I haven't either, and I certainly saw him and heard of him before you did.
Tell us, anyway, what is your first recollection of the legend who's the subject of this lengthy tome?

They were good times in '68 and '69... dicing with, chasing or beating Lotus 49s, and the fabulous races he had with Matich in the sports car.
Later in the F5000s he did little, having a substandard car compared to others, and the same applies to his drives here when he was younger. Second string car, the team boss' cast off.
So my recollections of him are a slender few. Great photo Staff!

Ray,
Thanks again, but my first recollection of Amon was 1963 and I was pretty young then and race coverage was on a two month delay from Road & Track. Four years later, I met Chris and Peter Revson quite by accident and didn't recognise either of them !! I think I might have been busy trying to impress my "girlfriend of the moment", but the young racers and I had an interesting hour of so of chatting with me reminding Linda that, "Hey, these two guys I'm talking to are race drivers!" I don't think see really cared or cared enough to believe me !!
Rosey,
Ditton Road by any other name might be the key !!
P 4 staff,
Great pic! It sums up the whole 69 season !!
..... and Ray again, I did mention that David has been following Chris' career longer than I and that his posts should never contain any drivel along the Capps line !!
O Volante,
We find fun where we seek it !!

Keir, what could be really educational would be if you would detail more about that conversation, where it happened and what they said. And how your friendship with Christopher went on from that point.
That wouldn't be fluff... nossir.
