This is the gaps to the leader in qualifying from Abu Dhabi 2009 compared to Abu Dhabi 2010. I used the best qualifying car from each team and compared it to the best time set in that particular session (so Toro Rosso's 2010 time was weighed against the best time in Q2). I rounded to the nearest tenth. This is in no way absolute proof.

'09 '10 Improvement from 2009 (lower is better)
Brawn/Mercedes 0.9 1.1 0.2
Renault 1.8 1.5 -0.3
Mclaren 0 0 0
Red Bull 0.7 0 -0.7
Ferrari 1 0.4 -0.6
Sauber 1.1 0.9 -0.2
Force India 1.8 1 -0.8
Toro Rosso 1.8 1.8 0
Williams 1.7 0.8 -0.9

So Williams and Force India improved the most. The field in general closed to gap to the quickest car. Only Brawn/Mercedes dropped in relative performance.

Pretty interesting stats, I thought that Renault improved the most, but well... I'm biased

Lotus is obviously the most improved team, followed closely by Virgin and Hispania. :p

I would've thought they would be one of the most improved as well. Then again, this is only Abu Dhabi. Maybe Kubica just wasn't on it that race (Petrov did outqualify him).

I'd probably guess that it's HRT.

Here are qualifying percentages (based on the 107% rule formula) from Australia and Abu Dhabi. I didn't use Bahrain because the HRT's barely got any running in and they were way off the pace. Lotus, Virgin, and HRT are compared against the best Q3 time. I used Q2 times for everyone else, for a couple reasons. 1. It rained during Q3 in Australia. 2. It seemed like it might be a fairer way to compare the rest of the teams, since times generally drop in Q3 due to a bit of added rubber and/or the use of soft qualifying tires (I'm not sure what tires they use in the other sessions).

Aus Abu change (lower is better)
Red Bull 100 100 0
Ferrari 100.28 100.44 0.16
Mclaren 100.52 100.14 -0.38
Mercedes 100.82 100.18 -0.64
Renault 101.22 100.78 -0.44
Force India 101.11 101.04 -0.07
Williams 101.17 100.6 -0.57
Toro Rosso 101.83 101.87 0.04
Sauber 101.96 100.91 -1.05
Lotus 104.75 103.34 -1.41
Virgin 105.68 103.92 -1.76
HRT 106.79 104.91 -1.88

So HRT, Virgin, and Lotus have the largest gains. Sauber makes the largest gain of the established teams, then Mercedes, Williams, and Renault. Toro Rosso and Force India hardly change at all (which means they went backward relative to Sauber, Williams, et al). Mclaren and Ferrari are harder to judge because they usually improve in Q3 along with Red Bull.

Except Red Bull and Ferrari, by your system, have the same level of improvement. Yet compare how well they did in 2009. Ferrari have made much bigger progress from last year to this than Red Bull have.

Well, it's only Abu Dhabi qualifying. All those stats indicate is that from 2009 to 2010, Ferrari's pace improvement relative to Red Bull's changed very little.
