rons quiz number four..

REally past my bedtime but here's a few:

1. John Britten

2.Walter Frank Morice - born Gisborne generally known as Morry Morice Raced Cooper Bristol in several minor Formula One races in 1956. Good friend of Horace Gould.

9. (1)Parnell - (2)whitehead-(3)Stan Jones- Ken Wharton- crashed in 100 mile sports car race. This was the first motor race I ever saw, as a 14-year-old kid, with my brother and a neighbour who was a Caltex Rep.

Hmm that's about all off the top of my head. Some research might produce a few more.

6. Richo? is that a nickname? I thought it was just tired Australian pronunciation, like rego, garbo, etc etc.

6. Gentleman Jim
7. They did have a minute's silence. They also had a minute of noise when the McLarens ran their engines.

There was a small gathering on Thursday to commemorate 40 years since Bruce's death. Jan was there as was Bruce's wife. Also many mechanics and others from the early McLaren days. A very nice event. Then they had a minute of silence before the 6 McLaren's in the Whitsun Trophy ran the engines for a minute of noise.

So Jan was around all weekend and we had her wear one of the USSR racing team hats and join in the fun.

1. beaten to it while I was out at the supermarket
2. Morry Morice is correct (though the first NZ Grand Prix driver was George Tapper, who by that time (1930s) was T P Cholmondeley-Tapper
3.
4. Unanswerable, unless you mean in a Tasman context, in which case it would be Clark 1, McLaren 47, Brabham 4, Hill 1
5. There were two, one by Peter Ross and the other by yours truly
6. I would have said 'JR' which is what he always was before he deserted the land of his birth
7. Scooped again
8. Beyond my area of expertise :)
9. Parnell, Whitehead, Jones. No-one was killed in a crash, though - as has been pointed out - Wharton was killed in the supporting sportscar race. He had qualified his 250F on pole for the Grand Prix
10. See 8

Sorry Ron, but your last question (10) has an error.

No driver flipped over the Western Springs fence, the incident happened during the Barry Butterworth Memorial Race held at Waikaraka Park, Auckland. The driver was Shane Allach.

Q8. Barry Butterworth.

2...(apparently morice) 6) i always remembered another nickname.. (just to be different )...

2. Morice - if you had access to issue #35 of Allan Dick's New Zealand Classic Driver (Dec 2010-Jan 2011) you would find an article by one David McKinney entitled "Unknown Trail Blazer" which details the life of Morry Morice. It is surprising that his wartime exploits are not well known (in NZ anyway).

6. Gentleman Jim rings a bell with me. Even after his celebrated podium description of the booing crowd at Bathurst (You're a pack of Arseholes!). Obviously a majority agreed with him!

In WA. (Still part of Australia at this stage !) Mick Geneve was a circuit and speedway driver, his son Ray was there at the inception of sprintcars, and Ray's son Rick races them nowadays.

Have a look at Brian Darbys Vintage Speedway site, just google that. A very large range of Aussie speedway. I am sure that you will see the likes of Butterworth, he was quick and crashed a LOT.

I dont think he has been called that since. I think that was a Mike Raymond tag.

Ray started in Supermodifieds, none of this new fangled stuff without a clutch. RF Spares 289 Ford powered No4? about 1970

I followed Barry's racing career from the brief time on speedway solo bikes, to TQ Midgets, and on to the Midgets. I certainly know he didn't crash a lot, he certainly WON a lot. I think there were some periods when he raced out of Sydney that he got crashed into a lot!

AJ Batt's book on Barry is going to be something special.

Ron, Jimmy Richards was always known as JR back in his racing days in NZ, and while he is certainly Gentleman Jim, to most Kiwi race followers he will always be JR.
Glad you like the vintage midget photos, pallmall is my handle on some speedway boards.

Mention of Barry Butterworth recalls the (?one off) meeting at the Kumeu Showgrounds in the 80's on a track of about 1200 yards from memory. Definitely a bit different from usual speedway. There's a website on it somewhere.

These quizzes have been great fun - keep them coming!!
