My question is what is the largest number of F1 champions competing in a season? And of course who and when?

Not sure if there have ever been more than 5 wdc on the grid before but I will happily be proved otherwise...

Has there ever been another season with more years covered?

It depends how you want to tally it. In 1992 there were 13 titled years or in 1993 there were 17 years covered if the drivers who won the title in future years are included. Other than that I think only the years when Fangio raced would be similar to the 2011 grid.
I mean champions already. At the start of the 2011 season the drivers that we know have championships are Schumacher (7), Alonso (2) Hamilton (1), Button (1) and Vettel (1) which is a combined total of 12 WDC years covered. We dont know the future winners, and if Schumacher does continue into 2012 and none of the current holders retire then it will be 14.

There are other drivers who could become WDC (Kubica, Rosberg, Massa, Webber, Sutil, ...) in the next 2 years, but you could be right that we will have 14 WDCs by then given that Hamilton, Alonso and Vettel are the bookies favourites for future titles.I mean champions already. It doesn't matter who wins the titles. As long as none of the champions retire each new season will have (at least) one more WDC title than the previous one. There are other drivers who could become WDC (Kubica, Rosberg, Massa, Webber, Sutil, ...) in the next 2 years, but you could be right that we will have 14 WDCs by then given that Hamilton, Alonso and Vettel are the bookies favourites for future titles.

This line up needs Kimi Raikkonen and it would be perfect.
And plz put Villeneuve in a Hispania

The number of championships between those drivers is also an interesting stat which is worth adding to to my question.

Considering he was ready willing and able to give up his #1 at Macca to partner a 7 time WDC at Ferrari, I think you are likely wrong. Oops SHRUB!!

The question is irrelevant since all current champions have been gifted their titles by the FIA.In 2011, there will be 5 F1 driver champions competing - Vettel, Button, Hamilton, Alonso & Shumacher. (and 2 almost champions Massa & Webber).
My question is what is the largest number of F1 champions competing in a season? And of course who and when?

My perception only. I don't want to explain because that would be too controversial.I dread to ask, but what?

Well you might as well because it sounds utterly ridiculous. Heck, Hamilton got his title despite the FIA seemingly not gifting it to him.My perception only. I don't want to explain because that would be too controversial.

1965: Brabham. Clark, Surtees, G Hill, and Phil Hill
Phil Hill 1965? Are you sure?

Phil didn't take part in any championship races in '65 so we can discount that. He did enter Monaco and Italy in '66 but he started neither race.

Replies like those are the reason why I think it would be too controversial. Besides that I don't have much time for that. But if you ask for it I would briefly expose it for you.Well you might as well because it sounds utterly ridiculous. Heck, Hamilton got his title despite the FIA seemingly not gifting it to him.

Must there be a nutbar in every interesting thread.

I just love it. Never, never discount Villeneuve. With him and Kimi we would have 7 WDCs, an all-time record.

So you should open a new thread: which championships in the past have not been gifted by the FIA?
Would be surely a killer thread. Great you still got such a splendid idea while the old year breathes it´s last.

if the drivers who won the title in future years are included.
Why would you do that? How can you include the titles that hadn't been won?

Well I thought I was but I should have checked my source better. Book said he had a couple of races in a private BRM, but these may have been non-championship races.
