I always thought the '1' was the red bit.

It is supposed to give you impression of speed ... but no, IMO that would be to simple. I'm pretty sure it's some sublimal advertising campaign to promote Bahrain. Someone should send this to EU Parliament and they will take care of this. :p

Bit like Fedex with their arrow, though. Now I will 'see' it everytime.

When I was in high school, we're talking over a decade ago, we had to do like rubber stamps in art class? Where you have a big block and then you carve out the pattern you want, coat it in paint, and then create it on your surface. But you could only do one color at a time and carve from a single block. So after you wiped off each color you carved away further into the design. It took a bit of mental work to figure out how to layer the design properly.

Anyways I figured I'd do the F1 logo because it was so simple and I knew roughly what it looked like, but it came out looking all wrong. Because I hadn't really noticed the 1 either, and wondered why my red feathery bits weren't working.

I've noticed this, but I still in my brain associate the 1 and the red section... hard to shake your first impression.

I'm pretty sure the old FIA logo was used to create a racing car using the same sort of method.

Exactly I didnt think I was the only one who thought this too Im just surprised alot of people here actually thought the white 1 was very obvious to alot of people. You can easily see how it can get confusing.

Its one of those ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh moments.

man I kinda thought the red was a "1" but a blurry "1" to signify speed. You know how speed can make pictures and stuff blurry....

I don't think I've ever looked closely at it, just assumed it was a 1, brain sees what it wants to see I guess.

Apparently this is a logo for something called Instituo de Estudos Orientais and symbolises a setting sun behind an oriental building. People with less pure minds might see something different in those oriental studies though:

Does anyone remember the old LUCAS logo, the diagonal with arrow-head in it, which appeared on the Lucas, Britax and Girling boxes? We worked on their packaging for a year and had to be told that the arrow-head was ╚ for LUCAS.

People perceive things differently.

One way you can separate 2 groups of people is the way they perceive images. We did this exercise at work once where we were shown a picture and when questioned half of the people listed all the things that were in the picture. I, and the other half of the people, hadn't noticed any of these things, or very few of them, but had thought of a concept that the picture represented to us (a scary father christmas was my impression if I remember rightly).

I don't know remember the science behind it but I'm willing to bet most people who noticed the '1' would have been in the first category and the dumb asses like myself in the second.

What's funny is the people in the first category just couldn't understand why I hadn't seen or remembered all the items in the picture, just like you can't understand why we didn't notice the white 1.

For myself I wouldn't be able to draw the logo even now having seen it a second ago and that was the first time I'd ever looked at it in detail, before that the logo represented f1 so my mind just assumed the red figure was a one.

Sort of but not really. The arrow isn't part of the brand name.
