I don't see how the suggestions that Massa underperforms due to Alonso being favoured are supposed to help his case.

Sulking over that would, in itself, indicate a mental weakness that marks him as a second-tier driver, regardless of his on-track abilities.

They aren't supposed to help his case, just explain his situation.

Does massa have the longest running pairing with a team at current on the grid? Only other I can think of is webber red bull, cant remember exact yrs though.

Indeed he have the longest partnership with a team from the current drivers. Webber joined RBR in 2007, so does Hamilton to McLaren.

But it doesn't explain his situation.
Kimi was the designated top dog and Massa just tried harder and beat him.
In 2005 Webber was the top dog at Williams and Heidfeld just tried tried harder and beat him.
Start of 2007 at McLaren, Alonso was top dog and Hamilton just tried harder.
F1 history is full of examples where the second banana beats the star of the team.
Massa being the encumbent had the circumstances in his favour to do the same.

Would you look at that!

He seems to have the full support of his Engineer; other than that Ferrari doesn't seem to be doing much for Felipe.

Look at my previous post(s). Germany isn't the only factor. (age, wealth, children, near death accident ect...)

As I said, Massa won't be allowed to race Alonso as long as Alonso is in a position to win the championship. I would love to see Massa out qualify and out race Alonso just so I could see what Alonso and Ferrari would do.

What explains his situation then?

It's too early in the season to tell anything really.

Massa can be erratic so judging him by first race is not fair. Besides he is not at Ferrari to win the WDC (he is not consistently quick for a serious challenge), but bring points for the WCC. If he can perform satisfactorily as a tier 2 driver Ferrari will let him complete the contract and not fire him midway as they were forced to do with Raikkonen.

Massa's problem might start if he cannot perform as a second tier driver (Heikki, Piquet both failed at this task), and keeps acting mercurial. Let's give him some more races.

Ah yes. The lament of the failed racer. Coulthard, Barrichello, Piquet, Kovalainen.....it's amazing how all these drivers have a very similar narrative to explain their failures.

I love the idea that Kobayashi is suddenly going to be a thorn to Alonso. Kobayashi will be lucky to be as good as Massa.

nobody knows that

I have never, ever heard any other team express an interest in Massa.
Maybe Ferrari can foist him on Sauber, as they have done before.
Massa's biggest asset is his manager.

I think that's due to the fact that Massa is (or used to be...) bound very tight to Ferrari. Just like we - or at least I - don't hear any other team express interest in Hamilton. It unrealistic for him to leave McLaren so others don't even bother thinking about him.

...precisely a reason why I think Kubica is done as well. Koba is next on the deck.

Impossible to judge Kubica - he's not on the track yet and he didn't hurt his head so no possible brain damage. Robert is out of the picture because he would probably come back for next year and have a contract with Renault and waiting for 2013 would not be on Ferrari's options. Besides no team would risk signing a driver who's form is in question because of such a huge accident.

And I don't believe in Koba, if it's going to happen it would rather be Sergio. This could also mean a straight swap for Felipe. I tend to agree with Metz - with all the talking during every silly season no team is reported to be really interested in him. "Massa" is usually followed by "out". There is also a free agent with some connections - Hulkenberg's the name ;)

Hiring Felipe could be a great way to get insider information about Ferrari. He has been there for a long time and he could have a lot of interesting things to reveal to other teams of past and current Ferrari F1 team affairs.

Good point, which is why Ferrari will probably pay him even more than they did Kimi not to race for anyone else in F1.

McLaren contacted him right before he got hit by the spring at Hungaroring 2009.

Are Massa's days numbered?

I dont think so but maybe it is time to define if Massa is back to himself or not rather than pulling the accident card only when convenient (i.e. Alonso beats him)

I think Massa has always been the same. The onlt difference has been the car pace to which his pace is very dependant on.

If so, then they are proving to be very high numbers!

Being serious, it all depends on Ferrari's long term driver plans. Perhaps Hulkenberg has been moved into position at Sauber for Ferrari to swoop? Or maybe they just want the option to be there if needed. I don't think Felipe can count on keeping his Ferrari seat in all circumstances, so the name of the game should be to try to generate possibilities at other teams (by driving well for as long as Ferrari keep him).

Should we delete all threads past 2 years? What are they're there for if not for being bumped?
