Looks really cool (esp the other pics on the site). Makes me want to go get one and see if my modeling skills are up to the task :D Need to find the Marlboro decal's to make it complete.

McLaren fans have to settle with 1998 MP4/13. Not fair! :)

The F1-2000 has got to be the most widely modeled F1 car of recent times.
So far we have:
The Tamiya 1/20 kit (Shown Above)
A Studio27 1/20 Kit (Plus a 'Japan GP' Transkit for the Tamiya model).
Three different BBR 1/20 kits
NINE Different 1/43 kits from BBR (One for each race winner).
A 1/24 White Metal kit from Tameo
3 different 1/43 White Metal kits from Tameo (Australia, Germany and Japan)
A 1/18 Die-cast version from Hotwheels
(Do they have the 1/43 version out yet?)

And so far that's it.
No Minichamps this year due to liscencing and all. A very good deal to choose from for the kit builder, not so much for the die-cast collector. Which is a shame, as I am sure Minichamps could have done a better job than Mattel.

I'm impressed! This model looks awesome. Does it come in white and you have to paint it and stuff? It looks so good and accurate that I'm seriously thinking of buying it. Maybe I'll give it to a friend of mine who is a skilled modelist (has many awards) to make it...

Mono-posto, there are 4 versions of the Schumacher Ferrari in 1/18 from Mattel, the (standard) first edition which had terrible inaccuracies that made Ferrari force Mattel to re-release the model, the (standard) second edition which had corrected body-parts and decals, the Nurburgring "Rain Master" edition which will come with the old helmet and rain-tyres and lastly the Suzuka "Championship" edition which will have Schumi's fist raised out of the cockpit.
The 1/43 is now available.

And yes, Minichamps would have done a far better job with it although the Mattel doesn't look that bad, but it is obviously flawed (even in it's "corrected" edition).[p][Edited by Andy on 01-21-2001]

Got the F310b (97) which was destroyed by my schumacher poster (As said a while ago in the PC, still yet to repair it)
Got the Mclaren, just have to paint the cowling, which I've put off for about a year, just can't be buggered to do so.

They didn't put out a model between the 98 one and this 2000 one did they?

Well that definitely adds to the list Max.
A matter of fact there is a VERY expensive and limited 1/4 scale version available and a 1/12 kit is rumored as well.

They didn't put out a model between the 98 one and this 2000 one did they?

No they didn't. The fact of the matter is that lisencing is becoming so damn expensive that even the big guys like Tamiya are having trouble justifying the cost. Remember that every sponsor that appears on the car, from Tic Tac to Bridgestone, needs to give the OK. Even the drivers are a 'business entity' and need to give permission to have their names applied to the product.

The problem is that these days it's not so simple to just approach a company, say Tic Tac for example, and say 'hey we want to make a model of this car do you mind if we use your logo?' and they say 'Sure, free advertising'.
Nope. Contracts need to be written, lawyers involved, percentages of fees negotiated. It's a nightmare.

Some of the small guys actually are better off as they can navigate the legal waters with very limited production numbers, non-main stream markets etc.
(And in the case of Ferrari, it dosn't hurt if you're Italian. Not one Italian model maker was effected by the Exclusive deal with Matell. Tamiya just went and got thier liscencing straight from Matell).

Tameo is one of the 'small' guys that is in a damn fine good position as he makes alot of display models for F1 company lobbys and even wind-tunnel models. He even has a side business making 1:1 parts for the real cars. So he is very visible and well known with the F1 teams and somehow never gets effected by exclusive liscencing deals...

mono-posto, I am under the impression that they don't need permission from the various sponsors when they have the permission of the team itself. On all my models' boxes I have noticed that except from the licence of each team itself, the only other copyright that is ever mentioned as 'used under permission' is the tyre manufacturer's because the tyres are in fact different and seperate parts.
So, if, for example, you want to produce a model of the Ferrari F1-2000 you need the permission of Ferrari, Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello and Bridgestone.

This is what I think, but I might be wrong...

Yeah, the only permissions I saw on the Ferrari F310b box were Ferrari and Goodyear.

I got the mclaren pictured above as a birthday present, but screwed up on many things, as its my first model, so I made it coulthard instead of hakkinen, and bought a minimum amount of paints. I'll buy the Salo tyrrell to practice some more and then the hakkinen mp4/13.

I just got the F1-2000 from www.hlj.com including Marlboro decals.... this thing rocks!!!
One of Tamiyas finest to date. Under the cowling is very detailed but it won't stop me adding more :-)

Reason for the three year old Mac is due to licence fees... 2 yaers ago was our last F1 release from Tamyia as teams a looing for a 10% cut of profits or something to that effect which is too high for Mr. Tamiya.
For that reason they are only coming out with a occasional car with some history to it in recent times.

I made a great Jaguar R1 out of the MP4/13 with the help of a friend printing the decals. It turned out marvelous after a few minor mods to the car as the R1 was almost a carbon copy of the MP4/13-14.

I noticed that its pretty cheap too, only about $40 (Australian dollars). But is it hard to put together? Will the final result look as good as the picture shown there?

Anyone know where you can order Marlboro livery for it?? Damn tobacco laws. It's not like the kit comes with a cigarette.

the final result will look that good if you're that good at doing it, but don't be fooled by the price, if you really want it to look nice(engine detail and everything) you need to buy all the paint(for the mclaren about 20 different colors)at about $3(us) each.

The car would be from a gp where you're not allowed the ads, so putting marlboro would make it from a different gp. The mclaren is from dc's and mika's 1-2 in germany, its interseting how the mclaren even has a different steering wheel if you're going to make it dc or mh.

The only version of the F1-2000 that you can build 'out of the box' is the French GP. All others had either Malrboro markings or the 'barcode' substitute and different wing configs. (Except maybe Indy if I recall, but the car ran with a straight wing there and the kit only comes with the V wing.)

Studio 27 out of Japan offers a Japanese GP 'transkit' with all the correct decals etc and BBR of Italy will soon have the Cig decals available. (They already have the 1/18 ones out, I have some if anyone's interested...)

Also, if you want to check out a build tutorial of this kit, go to:
http://www.modelersi...ish/central.htm

There is also some great pics of the F399 engine and gearbox on that site.

Max, I'm still looking into that liscencing for sponsors deal. I know they get something out of it, but am not sure how it all ties together.

mono-posto, you have 1/18 Marlboro decals for the Mattel Schumacher Ferrari? Do they include helmet and driver uniform decals?

I am building it right now. The parts come in red and black but you really do need to paint everything to really make it look good, IMO. It does not have the Marlboro decals but you can get them if you look above or they will be available from www.f1specialties.com very soon. I have ordered alot through them and they are good to deal with and have a large selection including etched metal parts for a real realistic look. I havn't tried that since my skills are not so great and I'm just doing it for fun. No driver figure either if that's important to you. Definitly going to check out the tutorial, thans Mono. I do think it's a really neat model and I just get a little more satisfaction out of building rather than buying a completed one even if it doesn't come out perfect.
