Pirelli Tire marking confusion...

Again we see the same tire compound choices for the third grand prix...the softs and the hards
Softs are Yellow, Hards are ~silver...Ok, easy...
In Malaysia, a gold(?) stripe was added to the soft tires to make it supposedly easier to recognize...this despite the fact that Gold lettering - I thought - was previous going to be used on 'development' tires...
Now in China I noticed the yellow soft tires are clearly being run with a silver(!) stripe on the shoulder??? Seems completely silly and needlessly confusing...

Soft tyre has a stripe, hard does not. They simply ran out of gold "stripes" so had to use silver.
Wow that was difficult.

Tire stripes were a temporary solution are supposedly gone for Turkey...Pirelli will be the upping the amount to 'color' on the tire sidewall. Sounds like it will be a silimar look to the Bridgestone reds in Champcar...

Seems like this is a moot point thankfully...

But you can't see the sidewalls from the onboard cameras...and will probably look awful...
I don't know why Pirelli are fussing about changing this about all the time.
Just leave it the same as the Bridgestone set up and everyone will know what the heck is going on.
Trying to be clever by testing a different set of designs at every race is crazy, when they should have settled on a design during winter testing anyway.

“We have had obviously a number of comments that people could not recognize the tires, and the stripe is not an ideal solution,” revealed Pirelli's motorsport director Paul Hembery, admitting that the solution found for Malaysia is an interim one.
“For Turkey, we will have a much stronger branding on the sidewall. We won't have the stripe; we will connect up the Pirelli and P-Zero wording with more bands of colour. It will mean that as it rotates, the black won't dominate. It will look like a turning circle of yellow - and be predominantly yellow in colour.”
“We will do the same branding for all of the different compounds. From the testing we have done so far, it seems to work very well,” he added.

Really? I found it a doddle today when on board. Bright yellow for soft, hardly anything noticeable for hard.

The stripes are on the rim though, Pirelli are talking about moving the colours down further to where the company branding is.
I'm not sure that's going to be an improvement really.

They're not trying to be clever. People complained at Australia that the markings didn't work well so they've tried changing them to improve things. They're handicapped in what they can do by the sheer amount of time it takes and the flyaway races.
Would you rather they just said "Tough, we're not changing them to next season"?
Personally it took me about two second to figure out which tyre was which.

And the proposed design for Turkey will be less visible to the onboard cameras so they'll probably end up back with the Bridgestone design at some point during the summer.
Painting the sidewalls which aren't as visible a the tyres rim is a daft idea.
IMO they are trying to be clever and making a mess of it all.
Bridgestone got it right years ago, and it worked fine for Malaysia and China, so why can't they just stick with that. :S
