I plan on being there, have just joined the Miller Club and see that it is a Friday-Saturday event. Is there anything scheduled for Sunday? I went to one of these some years ago and was lucky enough to get rides around the Mile in a few cars including the Golden Submarine (recreation). So who all is going, and will there be any sort of TNF meeting other than at the the meet and banquet?

I understand that Indy Car expert par excellance, especially of the front engine era, Michael Ferner may well be there also, all the way from Germany.
I would imagine that occasional poster, Miller expert, and Milwaukee Mile Historian Steve Zautke will update us on details as the date approaches. Right now Steve is in Indianapolis.

Would be nice to put some faces to names. Not sure, though, how to arrange meetings. I don't really know how things'll pan out, but if you see a tall guy with a ponytail (well, not that much hair left, but anyway...) and a TNF badge (#111) wandering around, make sure to stop by and say hello. Remember, I am German, so pleaze allow for zome difficulties in conferzation

Should not be difficult. The meet itself is confined to just half of the paddock area, and it is only a couple minutes one end to the other. One should be able to see just about everyone who is there within ten minutes or so.Would be nice to put some faces to names. Not sure, though, how to arrange meetings.
Of course we all could wear those annoying "HELLO!, My name is________" stickers...

I'm a short guy still in his 60s (barely), eyeglasses and a cheesy moustache. Assuming good weather, Friday I'll be wearing a floppy white sun hat and maroon Miller T-shirt with Leon Duray's 91 Front Drive on it. Incidentally, does anyone know if the banquet is a dress up affair? I'm coming from California and traveling light - would like to have room to take home anything I can afford from the Uihlein memorabilia auction.Should not be difficult. Casual elegance was the order of the day last year-especially for those of us from Cafifornia

Michael Ferner has missed out since Alpine Village, the ancient German Road House NW of the track that was used for years for the banquet has gone kaput.

The wildfire is mostly contained, Nebraska should be tornadoed out, and we here in Colorado have no real fears (stop at Jilbertito's for five-star burritos, West Glenwood exit, East 3 blocks)....Hopefully I will see you all there and am preparing to tow the car through 115f desert, AZ wildfire, CO -who knows what, NB tornados and IO flooding.

Perhaps we can pick a fine German restaurant to show off our Teutonic roots on Sunday. Possibly a field trip to Greenfield Gallery which has the Armin Krueger collection?

I still don't know if I'll be there, it will depend on the weather. I don't really feel like riding 800 miles on a sportbike in the rain. If I make it I'm the old, ugly, gray haired guy taking lots of pictures, wearing a black bike jacket and carrying a Shoei full face helmet.
Mark, I checked various weather forecasts, and the outlook is BRILLIANT for the weekend in Milwaukee*!! Start polishing yer bike mate!

* (Unlike the south, by the way, so you may experience some rain on your way

Can't wait till next year in which we feature the cars of the Vanderbilt Cup and celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 1912 Vanderbilt Cup and Milwaukee G.P. that was held on the streets of Milwaukee (not at the Milwaukee Mile).

Probably deserves its own thread. But as Steve said, next year will be the 100th Anniversary of the 1912 Grand Prix of the US (I believe they called it Grand Prize back then) and Vanderbilt Cup Race, both of which were held in the Town of Wauwatosa, a suburb of Milwaukee. The races were on the open roads, on a course of roughly seven miles in length. Caleb Bragg won the GP in a Fiat, while Ralph De Palma took the Vanderbilt Cup in a Mercedes. One of America's top drivers, David Bruce-Brown, sadly perished in practice. Can't wait till next year in which we feature the cars of the Vanderbilt Cup and celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 1912 Vanderbilt Cup and Milwaukee G.P. that was held on the streets of Milwaukee (not at the Milwaukee Mile).
John Haydon has published a soft bound history of these races and is heading a committee to promote events that will properly commemorate these races. The Millers at Milwaukee annual meet is primarily involved with various activities held in conjunction with that meet. I am sure that Steve will post more definitive info as it develops.

He was able to drive sessions in, both, the Bob Dicks owned 1963 #98 Agajanian Watson roadster replica
and the Carl Schulz owned 1927 #15 "Boyle Valve Spl." Miller replica. I think Michael had a great time and
we would like to thank him for helping us make the "mac miller specials" the lap leaders for the weekend.
I'm sure we got some pix of Michael on the track, so I will post them soon.
Michael not only "talks the talk" but, after running quite a few laps on the Milwaukee Mile, he can now "walk the walk"
Glad you were there, Michael, Hope we can do it again !!!!

Michael Ferner ready to go get them
TNFer Michael Ferner came all the way from Bitburg, Germany, to Milwaukee for this past weekend's Millers at Milwaukee meet of old Indy cars.

Michael Ferner entering the Milwaukee Mile in his friend Carl Schulz's Miller
Some 40+ cars were present for the two day meet, with alternating sessions for touring and 'faster'. Michael Ferner was fortunate in that Carl Schulz, owner of a 1927 Miller 91, let him go out onto the famed Milwaukee Mile for an entire touring session in the Miller. For someone who is such a fanatic on between the wars Indy cars, this had to be a real treat.
On his way to Milwaukee, Michael stopped in Indianapolis and toured the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. Not only that, but his guide was Donald Davidson, famed IMS historian, and Michael was shown the off-limits basement portion of the Museum where many cars not on exhibit are stored.

No, the driver's not Parnelli Jones, it's me getting ready to go out and play PJ

Behind the car is my friend Randall Cook, and car owner Bob Dicks is behind the camera, taking the pic.
I had a great time at Milwaukee, and thanks to car owners Bob Dicks and Carl Schultz I also had a lot of track time!! I was also out on the track as a passenger in Bill Castle's Miller (with his son Terry doing the driving) and in Bill Hoff's Bentley - a big thank you to all those gentlemen, especially the intrepid ones who let me drive their babies!

All in all, it was a very enjoyable week. I met several TNFers, like Jim Dillon, David Woodhouse, ZOOOM, Tom Schultz, Steve Zautke, mac miller and probably a few more I can't think of right now (sorry!), also Sonny Meyer, Donald Davidson, Gordon White, Joe Freeman, Bill Castle, Bill Spoerle etc. etc. I got the chance to look behind the doors of Dean Butler's "Zakira's Garage" and meet its staff, including the great Jim Himmelsbach and Josh Shaw, got to see the IMS museum and its basement, the photo archive and the restoration shop, got a glimpse of the car collection of the great Chuck Davis courtesy of his son, Chuck junior, and met basically everyone with a name in the business of collecting and restoring old racing cars in the US, especially Millers.
My special thanks go out to Tom Barbour, Harold Peters and Dave Hedrick, who made it all possible for me and opened all the right doors - ¡Muchas, muchas gracias, amigos!

I wish I could have spent more time at the track, but with my recent crash I have to limit my time on my feet, even moreso now that they put me in a cast yesterday.

Anyways, it was great to meet Michael Ferner, and see all of the Milwaukee regulars who made it out in the lovely humid weather.

Actually, DD did ask me questions, but I suppose he was just checking me out. He started by saying that he wasn't that interested in the individual car histories, and then proceeded to ask what I thought of Bothwell's Peugeot, and the 1925 and '27 winning Duesenbergs - it felt like grandma asking for advice on how to suck eggs...

Michael I would be curious as to why Donald Davidson would have questions about Bothwell's Peugeot. Although articles have been written on the car referring to it as Resta's car, I believe it to be the Klein/Book/DePalma/Brown's ex car. When I spoke to Rick Rawlins (caretaker of the car) we discussed this angle and he didn't seem to want me committed. What did you tell him, if I may ask?
