Back to Goodwood. I have been there for the very first time and I enjoy it so much. I was also very happy for Indy 500 celebration, because I´m huge fan of this legendary race. I made a highlight video about Indy at Goodwood. Hope you will like it.

And I also have to say hallo to Condor, who I met in the Pub near FoS with the large garden, where we slept in the tent.

Here you can find a video.

Awesome video!

I can't complain for missing Goodwood since I was at Indy last May.
But I surely missed something....

From your earlier post, we hadn't realised that you'd got on that well...

agrh...I didn´t mean that we slept in the tent together. :) English isn´t my native language, so I have to think carefully before I write something. In this case, I didn´t think.

She had a tent at the other side of the garden. We met her in the pub with my friends. There was also her friend, but I cannot remember his name or nickname. :well:

Thanks for positive response. I tried to record as many indycars and drivers as I can. I knew, that I can go to Goodwood in the future, but Indy celebration won´t be there again.

Now, I´m gonna make overall highlights video from the FoS.

Ah, that explains why when I visit Cologne with a business associate from the Netherlands, he is always asking around the bars in the evenings for his grandad's bike back. :)

Giraffe and others,

it is indeed related with WW2.

But many years ago I heard the question being told by a comedian (For the dutch readers: Fons Jansen) who told his audience which question to ask when abroad.
I remember the one you had to ask when in Lourdes, France. Since it has an automobile link, Here it is.

In Dutch: "hoe laat gebeurt er hier een wonder op wielen?
In french that is something like: "A quel heure se produit un miracle sur roues?
Which in English means so much as "At which time does a miracle on wheels taking place here?
This was a reference to the then running Peugeot commercials in which Peugeot was proclaimed to be in Dutch: "A miracle on wheels "

T54 tries Costin Protos for size.

I was talking to the friendly guy on the right wearing the check shirt, discussing that Costin. He told me that when they aquired the car, the screen was fixed, they had added the quick release at the front. We agreed that as originally built and raced, it must have been a very difficult car to get in and out of, so can that be right? 'Elf'n safety' would never pass something like that today, indeed the rules would preclude it, but maybe T54 can tell us how he managed, surely they removed the screen for him?

This is how they did it so T54 could get out. The quick release nut & bolt was only releasable from outside the cockpit AFAIK. I have not checked period Autosports for how it was in period. I believe Brian Hart was due there on the Sunday, health permitting. The chap in the check shirt owns the various Protos devices.

Can I dare to correct you, but to be pedantic the Farina body car was on a Jupiter chassis. About 75 of the early Jupiter chassis's were bodied by outside body builders. I think that there were four bodied by Farina.

By the way, the Javelin doesn't have a chassis.

This is how they did it so T54 could get out.

I have to thank Brian Blain for letting me sit in this car, that I myself saw RACE in Germany in its day. Brian did an AWESOME job on this car, and the quality of the restoration is really, really tops. I always LOVED the Protos, and believe that with some money for some development, it would have simply dominated F2 especially on the fast circuits. The composite chassis is a marvel of lightness and rigidity and the Costin body is simply awesome. The car was very comfortable and fitted me perfectly, so indeed I would have loved to take it for a spin... maybe some day. :)
I was told today by my ophthalmologist after my unfortunate incident in France the week after Goodwood that I will be OK for more racing, that the repair on my retina was extremely well done by the Lebanese surgeon who operated on me in Caen.
I am ready now, but perhaps I will wait a few weeks...

Here's a picture of Pedro Rodriguez (I hope Ted Walker, who owns the copyright, doesn't mind me posting it here) getting in (or out of) the Protos at Hockenheim 1967 and as you can see, the screen was fixed :

Hi Luc,
Thank you so much for sending me the little photo album on my email. You have some talent to make me look good!
The Protos was a very comfortable car to be in, as you can tell on this one taken by my wife;

Posted Image

I also tried another ride, to see if I would even FIT, and if Duane Spencer did indeed drive this thing, he must have been 5'5" and have lots of courage... just sitting in it feels scary.

Posted Image

Don't try this at home!

Since we are doing musical chairs, here is Dario Franchitti trying the Coop' for size...

Posted Image

He had no problem fitting either... so stay tuned for some test laps sometimes in the near future...

No, the gasket is fine. One of the 50-year old cylinder liners decided that it had enough and developed a crack. The cylinder filled with water, and I guess it is time for a proper re-haul, with this time modern liners and pistons... I think that they have done their duty after running that long: an Indy 500, two wins at the Times GP plus a few more by Penske, and at least 1500 miles of my own punishment. Time to give the poor old lady a break.
I dropped by Crosthwaite & Gardiner on my way to France to inquire about new parts and visit with Dick and Ollie, and no problem, bits are off the shelf.
I can do this engine with my eyes closed by now... I will do it soon. :)

Superb! Did you do some of the 70s or 80s F1 cars?

The Brabham BT42/6 (?) had a little difficulty negotiating the change of terrain from grass to metal walkway.

The other day I watched a video of the (timed) hill climb. I think this Brabham and a few other (Lotus?) F1 cars run on wet (?) tyres, the winning Lotus 88B (fantastic run!) was on slicks. Why did some the drivers (in historic F1) choose wets (the track was completely dry) for the competition (I don't mean the demo run guys)?

Coming extremely late to this (we are now nearer the Revival than the Festival!), I do have one or two pics and a couple of observations.

First, a couple of the statics in the Jaguar area:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Next: the only way is up..........

Posted Image

unless you're on the downside.....

Posted Image

While the balancing act was making its slow way up the hill, those in front of the house were royally entertained by the brilliant Matty Griffin (yes, he is doing a doughnut while sitting on the bars.....backwards):

Posted Image

Somewhere in here is Ken Block:

Posted Image

and another rubber-shredder:

Posted Image

This Alfa was parked under the trees near the supercar paddock on Saturday - I don't know if it ever ran, or if not, what it was doing there:

Posted Image

And back to the paddock, where we have the forward propshaft (?) of the Cosworth 4wd:

Posted Image

and the workings of the Tecno-DAF:

Posted Image

On the hill again, Stuck the younger, now 62 I believe, who was on TV the other night sharing a Lamborghini with his sons in the 'Ring 24 hours, which was apparently his last race before retiring:

Posted Image

And this sat in the paddock all weekend and was obviously never meant to run, as there were no piles of tyres/laptops/starters/fluid warming rigs with it:

Posted Image

Some of the F1 teams don't seem to be taking it seriously enough; RB brought the same 2005 V10 car they've run for the last few years, McLaren brought the 2008 car yet again, Renault brought 1 real F1 car and a lookalike trackday car they've built for Walter Mittys, and Mercedes brought the repainted 2009 Brawn again (is that the one they were supposed to have given Button, or was it Rubens' car or the newly-built car they tried to fob Button off with?). Anyway, I wasn't very impressed.

And I don't know how many awestruck dudes watched the 'freestyle moto-cross/trials' on the cricket square, but when the display was on the deafening commentary totally ruined my enjoyment of any of the trade stands.

I've been to every FoS, and to me it levelled off about 10 years ago..........but the prices didn't! But I'll still go, because there's nothing else like it.

I couldn't agree more. I was down by the exit gate "working" and it was not possible to hold a conversation. It also wasn't possible to make out what the commentator was saying because of distortion.

This from Bill Sadler:

"...I had a wonderful surprise at the Festival of speed.
They celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Indy 500 there and had lots of 500 winners and drivers.

I was invited to and drove a 1973 Volstedt Offy Special, a rear engined 1000 hp winged Indy car for the final Sunday tribute to the Indy drivers.
It had been driven in the morning by Arie Luyendyk, who told me it was great to drive.
This was the first time I had ever sat in an Indy car and my first time on the Goodwood hill, so it was a treat for me.
Thankfully, all of the Indycar runs up the Goodwood hill were demos only and not timed

Most impressive to me was the fact that I was in the middle of the greatest Indycar grid ever assembled.
All around me were famous Indy driver legends like: Bobby Rahal, Emmerson Fittipaldi, Parnelli Jones (driving the Granitelli Turbine car just in front of me), Johnny Rutherford (just beside me), Danny Sullivan, Bobby Unser (just in front of me beside the turbine car), Al Unser Junior, Eddy Cheever and Arie Luyendyk. Of course all of the current and recent 500 champions were also on this same grid.

After the marching band came "Back Home in Indiana" then "Gentlemen Start Your Engines" and a commentary from the actual Indy announcer.
We then motored back to the start of the Goodwood hill and in turn, took our run up the hill.
My run went just fine with lots of engine noise and smoke with no records threatened.

I am still pinching myself, just to make sure!..."

More from Bill Sadler:

"The photo of the blue single seater on the web is me in the 1973 Vollstedt Turbo Offy with 1000 hp. I did drive it up the hill on Sunday Afternoon. It was listed as a 1977, but Bob Pepper said it was actually a 1973.

Attached are 2 photos of that event., one with Bobby Rahal beside me waiting for the final grid formation (the other with the owner)...

I'll be driving to Monterey in my 1985 white Corvette and staying in Monterey courtesy of the Sadler Mayer Special car owner. I'll be promoting the car at the Bonham's Quail Lodge auction...

Posted Image Posted Image

All the best to you all,
Bill"

Interesting stuff, but I wouldn't mind betting that's the first time that Vollstedt has ever worn a set of wets.

Further to post #328:

From Ralph Zbarsky, co-author of "Vollstedt; from Track Roadsters to Indy Cars, the Rolla Vollstedt Story" by Rolla Vollstedt with Ralph Zbarsky.

"...Thanks for the photos guys, I will give a copy to Rolla when I see him at the Columbia River Classic (at Portland, Labor Day weekend). This car is from 1973, and ran through 1976, drivers included Bill Simpson, Bob Harkey, Tom Bigelow and Dick Simon....... Rolla doesn’t get out too much these days..... he restored that Indy car about 10 years ago, for Joe Green, the fellow shown with Bill Sadler in the photo...RZ"

The track surface is very "dirty" and doesn't offer huge grip for a slick tyre. Also, slicks normally need time to warm up - impossible at the start area to get them really up to temperature. Therefore, many drivers choose to run wets as they offer better grip given the conditions.

Jerry Judah's amazing sculptures in front of Goodwood House have all disappeared after the event. But he told me last year that the giant tubular E-type had been built so that it could be dismantled and re-erected. Word was that it would re-emerge in front of one of Jaguar's premises.
Does anyone know what's happened or what's planned?

But did BRM race it in 1969? Which is equivalent to running it up the hill 40 years later?

The point I made is that the H16 was a 3 year old car when BRM showed it at the Racing Car Show just like the 2 year old re-painted Brawn and the 3 year old McLaren that were displayed at the Festival last year.

You may be interested, or not, to know that in 1974 I ran my Trojan F5000 at the Brighton Speed Trials, then a kilometre standing start, sharing with the late David Purley. I put it on wets, which David was not that keen on, and on our practice runs we both broke the course record. The first timed run David was quicker than me setting a new course record. For the second run David wanted slicks and I was the quicker of the two but slower than the runs on wets. The car was very lively at the end of the run where the course narrows down. So we went away with FTD and second fastest and all the trophies and cash. It still rankles me that he beat me in my own car, but he made a perfect start thanks to soft rubber. Personally, if a car didn't have uncut wets or a super soft slick, I would always run on wets. I witnessed Mike Wilds' horrendous crash in Nick Mason's Ferrari F1 at Goodwood on rock hard slicks.

Smarjoram. Lovely sketches. I particularly like the Delage which was in my uncle's ownership pre-war, a picture of which hangs in my office.
