Guys,
In my opinion if DRS was introduced to aid overtaking it should really be banned in qualifying.
In doing so it would also negate the advantage redbull has at the moment and open up a more level field, making qualifying interesting again.
What do you think?
That was my opinion at first, but some higher educated minds around here convinced me otherwise.
The DRS and the rev limited engine do not live well together. If you didn't make DRS free for all in qual, teams would always go for the smallest lap time in qual if the disadvantage during a full race lap wasn't big enough.
The problem is, most likely, the full race lap won't be much slower if you keep the higher gear a bit short. That would make an optimal qual lap, a nice race lap but would cancel the DRS effect for the engine cutting at 18k rpm.
The way it is, teams will use a longer higher gear, making for a fast qual lap with DRS and preventing a rev cut-off during race when DRS is active
So you either keep the DRS free for qualy or get rid of it for good.
