The "Gulf Oil" light blue and orange color scheme is too dated to be on a modern sports car. It's just plain ugly now.
give it 20 years after they win (again)... you'll be waxing nostalgic about them
edit: would OAK Racing's Pescarolo Judd be the type of "modern" you were looking for?

The Gulf Colours are brilliant, it's just been put on half an ugly car with the other half left black.

Why do we like Gulf so much?
Cause Steve McQueen drove a Gulf car in the Le Mans movie

Now it is more commonly found on amateur efforts.
Dave Richards will be impressed, prodrive an amature effort.
Gulf colour scheme is The Iconic scheme for Le Mans cars.

However this year there are 6 cars in that livery, none of which are going to feature at the top of any category. That is simply way way too many. The livery is striking and iconic, but not particularly pretty. Having 6 cars out there in those colours will decrease the striking factor and all that will be left is an odd combination of blue and orange.

Agreed. All that black spoils the clean simplicity of the proper version. It's still a nice livery, but this year's incarnation of it is pretty awful.

Even back in the day, the light blue always looked like it was faded/sun bleached to me.

To me, the Gulf light blue looks like it's much lighter than it used to be. It looks almost white in some recent photos I've seen. I think it would look much better if it were a little darker, and if there was a lot less orange.
could it be color saturation of Kodachrome film as opposed to an actual shade difference?

I see part of your problem, that car has an alien black on the front! It kills a lot of the scheme.
The white thing, yes, it looks like it's much whiter. From what I have read getting the right colour can be tricky. People are discussing a similar issue about the Renault JPS colors (particularly the golden) not looking quite right. Itr also doesnt help that the car does not have a hige nose to show off the scheme.

I agree with the thread starter that the livery does look good on the old cars. But on the new cars it is nothing special at all. I do not like mediocre privateer teams trying to evoke the JW 917 by painting their cars blue and orange. It was okay when only a good team like Aston did it, but 7 cars this year (in all likehood all bad entries) is just way too many. Thank god Oak painted their 4th car black or we would have had another one.
One in 9 cars at Le Mans will be in that livery! That is not doing John Wyer any favour.

Surely the real issue is that this car is so ugly it makes it mother cry?
No livery could hide that.
