I still have all the programmes from my races at Llandow, so might be able to put names to them if you knew the date? I have such fond memories of Llandow, as I'm sure you have.

Hi, rode at Llandow in 1972 in some vintage races and went back in the eighties for a rally school.The late John Wilkinson was the top Vintage racer at the time on Stan Johnson's Nortons. He could blow me off anytime as I rode a 350 triumph single. BUT at Llandow it pissed it down. As a speedway and grass track rider It made little diference to me. Remember, it is easy to go quick on a slow bike in adverse conditions. I led the final for most of the race, John taking it about a lap from home.Stans Nortons were always fast. When asked why these old nails went so quick Stan would invariably say"I put 'em up with a compression of 6:1 and use standard bits in'em!" Stan was obviously impressed with my 3HW Triumph donk as he came up and asked "what you got in there son" "Not much Stan" I replied "I've set it up at 6:1 compression and used all standard parts." He sucked on his pipe as he reflected on this reply before saying "You cheeky bastard" and storming off. Stan once said during an "Ask the experts" session at a vintage club do "Convert the sodding thing to OHC." The question was how to make a two stroke go faster!

you got the ducati bit right and it belonged to enzo, now i`ve given you too much info.
ginger blainey who raced at llandow many times, and yes you`re quite right he was a character.
lot`s of fond memories of llandow and still some painful ones, but that goes with the territory.
the fondest memory for me at llandow was when wales eventually won the celtic match races against the odds.
the irish who were favourites had some fine riders in their team including the great ray mccullogh.

I'm puzzling over the other one, because it looks like Jeff Jones's leathers (light blue if I recall), but I don't remember him riding a 250, except for a Royal Enfield GP5 he once had.
Can you give us a clue? Got any more photos?

i knew you wouldn`t take too long to work it out.
it`s andy silverthorn and myself on sprint to finish ending with andy winning.
if you look at the brands photo posted earlier you will note that the leathers are in fact blue.
i wiil try to post more photos today.

Great shot!
I'm guessing one of Dennis Ferrell's pictures ? He had the knack of catching riders getting out of shape. I remember a great shot he took of Brian Hussey getting sideways on his Manx at Oulton Park! His slide shows at club nights were always a treat. Are you still in touch with Dennis? I'm sure his photos would be appreciated by many on this forum.
So it's you on the TZ and is that Keith Ferrell about to dump his Kawasaki ? (Or did he recover the slide?).

it certainly is one of dennis ferrells photos and he certainly did have that knack for being at the right spot.
his collection of photos are fantastic and he`s still at it albeit only at internatiuonal meetings. when i next have the opportunity
to collect a huge selection of photos from him i will post them.
keith ferrell was indeed the other rider and he managed to save the bike to finish the race .

Well, certainly not in the same league as Dennis Ferrel, but since we are on th Llandow topic again, I finally got down to scanning some pictures I took on the only time I had a camera with me , which was on that occasion :



As it was a Bantam event, about half of the races were for Bantams, the other half for...all the rest . There was one numbering sequence for the bantams, one for the others, so that should help identifying folks.

So the "others" were ( in three fields, probably fot track capacity reasons ? )

Thanks for posting these!
Although I'm not entered on this occasion, I didn't miss many Llandow meetings around that time, and I remember many of the riders listed. It brought a lot of memories back! What Llandow lacked as a circuit, it more than made up for in atmosphere. There was such friendliness amongst the riders and everyone involved, as Keith will confirm, which makes the memory of that time so special. A lot of us went on to become regular national competitors (with varying degress of success!), but that was where it all started for many. Among these were:

Wayne Dinham; Roger Nicholls; Bill and Rob Marks; Cilve Watts; Brian Adams; Steve Williams; Phil Landeg and many more that don't immediately spring to mind.

Racing started there in 1965 and among the entries "cutting their teeth" in those early years were: Rod Gould; Mick Grant; Ray Pickrell; Charlie Sanby; Malcolm Uphill and Selwyn Griffiths.

I was at that meeting too, my brother Derek is listed in the programme on his Norton and he also appears in one of the photos. That was the first time I'd been to Llandow, we travelled down on the Friday night and after being entertained by a couple of drunks waiting for a bus when we stopped at a chippy in Cardiff I slept in the back of the Vauxhall Viva used as a tow vehicle. I marshalled that day at the exit of the corner leading onto the straight that ran past the paddock. In the link to an earlier thread that you posted Mick Jones talked about Cliff Gobell breaking his leg, I was one of two marshalls who dealt with that. The track was very wide on the exit to that corner and when Cliff came off myself and the other lad looked back to the entrance to the bend and the nearest bikes were coming down the start finish straight so we started running across the track to help Cliff, it was bit of a surprise when about three quarters of the way across we heard the unmistakable sound of a bunch of Bantams right behind us! What made it worse was the pair of clowns at the flag station before our post didn't put the yellow flag out.

In the photos of the Bantams, the rider with JB on his helmet is John Bass and the crashed rider with an S on his back is Sebastian Kent, funny how I remember that after all these years.
