Why do you like F1? Is it purely the result that motivates you, or, like me, could you not give a damn about the end result provided the racing itself was exciting?

I suppose racing itself is the most important thing to me. BMW Williams is my team and it hasn't won for 3 years. I absolutely do not care about the driver, unless Gille's ghost comes back and drive for one of the team.

The first time I watched F1, I was hooked. I was hooked to any auto racing that came on back in the mid-80's. This included NASCAR which was on ESPN and CART which was mostly shown on ABC. I didn't even bother know any names until 88. The teams didn't come until 90.

"I find the girls pretty - if only I could ride one..."

He he he, true! I wake up extra early for the Monaco GP, they show a lot during the pre-race show...

If it was all about drivers and not cars, we'd watch F3 or F3000. If it was all about sportsmen we'd watch athletics.

It's all about technology so they should free up the rules and let teams innovate. Which is how Lotus became the greatest team ever in F1(amonsgt others)... ah, the good old days.

I voted for the new technology, some of which I find truly exciting and some of which is almost inevitable given the way regulations evolve within each design 'dispensation' in F1.

I don't want to hit this one too hard, since this was not my poll, but could we lose the medium-green stuff like the entry on this poll about the 'pretty girls' and what we'd like to do with them? It seems a little over the top and disrespectful toward the women who visit, never mind are regulars on, this site. End of sermon.

I thought that bit was brilliant. I could do without the witty:rolleyes: "Schumi's dickie" post from a few days ago, but I thought the comment in this poll was quite funny. I actually laughed out loud and people around me had to ask what I was doing...

I watch F1 because of the cars (looks, speed, and sound). I also like looking at the men. They're in better shape than the Nascar (nasty car) drivers. Can't help it. I'm female. I have to look.

I just love the tingly feeling when I hear a Formula 1 car start its engine, the thrill of watching and hearing them go past. Yes I want Jordan to win, or at least get on the podium, but the thrill of the race is the same whoever wins.

The constant technical advancement, together with the personalities that bring that about (Newey, Postethwaite, Head etc), and the skills of the drivers... all of them... are intoxicating.
The noise is something else.

I'm starting to go down the Really Boring root but still very addicted. I think if it wasn't for Atlas (I'm serious) I probably would have lost interest a long time ago. When the teams become more equal and the battles more interesting I think my interest will increase.

I wish sometimes I had more time to read up on the technicalities of the sport to keep my interest in that avenue.

Still F1 is the best. And I await every big crash (as long as no one gets hurt)

I'm just hoping for a repeat of '82 - so many winners, so little predictability. It'll never happen again...

First, I watch for the best cars in the world doing standing starts, LIVE.

Second, I watch for the unexpected things that always seem to occur.

No...that would have been a scene though...

I work in an IT shop. People break out into hysterics for no reason all the time. Lots and lots of nervous twitches too.

No one even noticed...

Being a Brit I'm always hoping the Jaguar team will feature. Perhaps after the shake-ups this season will be better for them. Apart from that I'm always in for a good race, no matter which cars are leading.

Sorry I must be some sort of Igit for not managing to set up the poll correctly.

As Ms Snow1 has pointed out there are a forgotten breed of people who enjoy F1, but I assume I didn't have a watching the blokes section because I'm a narrow minded chauvenist 84574RD.

I almost tagged the "F1 was is boring, but I'm somehow addicted" as an afterthought, so I'm surprised it pulled so many votes.

Thanks to all those who took part - it provoked an interesting response. I've logged your names and IP Addresses for future reference/blackmail.

Everything but the racing which is boring.

Just love the thumping exhaust noise as they downshift into a corner and that lovely howling scream as they accelerate away. I think they should do away with commentators and let us hear the engines on tv.

I want to see Jordan to win, but if they don't, oh well.

Sights and sounds of the racing. I hope whoever covers F1 in the US this year will provide plenty of in-car audio/visual feeds.

I watch F1 because of strategy, to see which team employs the best strategy.

I had to go with boring but addicted, but that's not entirely true. I find it the most nuanced sport (or anything) in the world. I don't understand anything about engineering etc, (heck, I dont' even drive regularly) but it blows my mind that a centimeter of some bit on the car can made a hundreths of a second's difference, which can add up to seconds in the end, just as how a driver can lose a fraction of a second hitting a certain curb wrong and blow the race. Then the personalities! That I make an opinion about a driver's personality about how he takes that corner or handles his starts, and thus feel a strong affinity or distaste for him. In the past few years, I've been hearing them talk a lot more which makes it more entertaining for sure, and then top it off with Bernie's politics!

THEN! I get to moralize because I think that guy didn't have the corner when he hit so-and-so off or that team owner wronged his driver with his pit stop strategy etc...

...and that's why we're all members of this bb isn't it?!

I have to agree with all of the above, plus i just marvel at the individual skills of the drivers. God knows I don't watch it for the abundance of wheel to wheel racing. (Sigh) I can always dream.

I started watching because an Australian won the championship.
I continued to watch, fascinated with these idiots that flirted with injury/death and witnessed some unfortunate incidents live - right there in my own living room.
The spectacular accidents still keep me riveted to the TV (I don't wish anyone to get hurt though).
I look forward to the inevitable coming together at the first corner. I hold my breath, hoping that the Jordan pitstop is flawless (and anyone elses pitstop is terrible).
I screamed in disgust everytime Wurz took out Hill, then Trulli.
I sit in quiet contentment when my team (or a backrunner) scores some championship points.
I brag to my workmates when Jordan makes the podium.
I laughed when MH cried. I cried when RB cried.

What can I say? I'm hooked.:)

As others have said, the drivers' skill astounds me.

At one time I thought that, had I been raised as a driver (karts, etc.), that perhaps I could compare with the guys out there.

Then a couple of years ago I was watching JV during a pit stop when the lollipop guy double-pumped... He lifted it up maybe a foot, but then lowered it again. JV started and stopped the car within a fraction of a second and moved no more than an inch or two. I remember looking on with my jaw down at my chest. It was an awakening of sorts...these guys have some incredible reflexes.

Funny how some things stick with you. That's one I can still replay in my mind.
