I have been searching the archive of the Irish Times for information on speed events in Eire to tidy up that part of the book on Race and Speed Events in the British Isles. The archive has been very useful, but I still have some outstanding questions. I hope someone out there can help – I’m really up against the October deadline for delivery.
The first five queries relate to sites listed in “Irish Racing Venues; the definitive list” thread on the Nostalgia Forum.
Athboy Co. Meath Kart Track Sprint Course – haven’t turned up anything
Fota Estate Sprint course presumably the one near Cork, was it on the Island or does to site refer to the Industrial Estate nearby? I can’t find anything.
Mitchelstown hillclimb can’t find anything beyond a Stage Rally in 2005
St Patrick’s Trian Hillclimb No other information
Mullaghmore hillclimb no further information.
Altidore hillclimb – need course information
Laragh hillclimb need course information, near Glendalough and did it use the “old military road”?
Shay or Shea Lawless which is correct?
Kilmoganny hillclimb Co. Kilkenny need course information
Curlew Hill Co. Roscommon need location and description
Ben Hill, County Galway need location and description
Bray Promenade Speed Trials - did the event scheduled for 15 September 1951 go ahead? I can’t find any results.
Does anyone have any information on these outstanding queries? Hope you can help.
I’m off to check the archive for early events in Northern Ireland.
