A mate of mine was asking about the giant flag you see come out at trophy presentations when Ferrari wins a race, at Monza in particular (although I'm sure I've seen it at other places). He wondered how anyone could get something that big past security, and I'm not entirely sure myself. I know that Serie A tries to ban those big flags for the teams (especially the Ultra ones), but they have no luck there.

Thinking about Monza I know there is a massive fence around the track, and you can access from a couple of different places (I walked in the front gate for testing after catching a bus, but for the race I caught the train and entered on the other side). I didn't see anyone carrying something that big. Perhaps they throw it over the fence as they are climbing over?

Any ideas?

Maybe its in 500 pieces and assembled in Velcro

anyone think there will be a display at Monza like at the Ferrari launch? the entire crowd spelling something out?

It'd be neat but it'd be hard to reserve that many seats

As an Italian friend once told me "you must remember, Italy is a country where miracles still can happen" :)

The tifosi have promised to boycott the wearing of red and the waving of Ferrai flags at Monza because the ticket prices were increased by a huge margin. So we might not see it there this year.

An italian friend told me he's been to about 5 monza gps without buying a ticket, they climb the fence the previous night, smoke up on weed and drink everything possible, a few times a guard caught them but the guard ends up staying with them for some reason. Last year however he payed since he didn't want to risk flying to italy from malaysia and getting thrown out=)

I Have a photo of the flag standing under it in Imola. It is the Ferrari club of Italy who brings it along and have it on a small ehhh thing with weels (Dont know the term in English) the security for bringing in big red/yellow things with horses on isn't that big in Italy...

Security in Italy? eh, the big joke!!!!

Last year I went to Imola and I was camping along the river nearby the track. The camping was full of German people, mostly but Italian fans arrived on saturday. During the night, many of them crossed the river in small inflatable boats (or whatever that floats) or swimming. They partied all night long, around fires, smoking, drinikng...(as 100cc described it).

Also there're many tribunes inside the track area that are booked for italians Ferrari club (i've a picture of some) and I guess these guys have some facilities to bring such flags and stuff.

And remember, Ferrari is not just a car marker in Italy, it's a RELIGION (like Germans praise God MS ;))!

MY :smoking:friend:smoking: described it well,"The best thing about waking up was that you couldn't think about your hangover or other s**t feelings, because you woke up to the sound of a formula 1 engine" (not some ugly bitch next to you:))

Guys - I don't know you, but apart from Monaco, I always drove into the circuit. So, both at Monza and Imola, I just had to show my ticket, pay for parking and drove in. Nobody checks your trunk, you can have in there all you want. Also, I fail to see what is the issue with a giant Ferrari flag (or any other team). This is not soccer where fans of opposing teams beat the crap out if each other and sometimes someone gets killed. In F1, thank God, we see people with Ferrari flags sitting near to people with Finnish flags painted on their faces near people singing in German. Everyone expresses their feelings and cheers one team or a driver, but it never escalates to a point where banning of flags is required.

When going to the race here in Montreal you never get stopped bringing things in i once saw some guys bring a sofa through the front gates without a problem so bringing that big flag would be no problem ;)

RF,
I saw parking outside (in the park), but I wasn't aware that you could drive into the circuit itself - I guess that's the probable answer. Although I do like the parachute theory :D

I'm not a Ferrari fan, but I have no problem with them bringing the flag in - in fact I think it's a pretty cool thing to do. I made the reference to the football flags because that's an ugly thing (particularly the Ultras, which is a problem unique to Italy, it seems) which goes unchecked in Italy, not to draw the two together.

At sepang the gates are so damn small I'm surprised if someone hasn't been able to fit, I had problems carrying my camera bag through the gate cause it was hard to fit, so don't think about bringing large coolers into sepang, and oh, at slower times(i.e in the morning), the sepang people DO check your bags.

ultras unique to Italy???

have you missed the hordes of British hooligans rioting in Italy 1990 and France 1998???? missed the Liverpool fans killing 40 Juventus fans at the Heisel stadium for the Champion's League final? missed the Dutch trowing a bomb on the field? missed the Turkish fans doing the same?

Unfortunately, ultras are a pretty common phenomenon in Europe, particularly in the UK, Holland, Italy and Germany. But you fond incidents everywhere.
