Yeah, I wonder what happened to those guys. I think the attendance will be good just because of the Earnhardts participation.

Wtf?

Luckily there's two day qualifying yeah?

Please tell me there is, otherwise Porsche is dead

Down with Rob Dyson, I cant beleive he put Max Papis, the king of Daytona in the slow Dyson car. Put Max in with Weaver and the gang and they'll lead the entire thing

Apparently, just the top two cars have been guaranteed starting spots so the second round of qualifying must be important. Also, the weather conditions weren't great for the first round of qualifying, so the second round should be more important so long as it doesn't rain again.

Besides international sports car drivers, this event has a CART driver, an IRL driver, a NASCAR Busch Grand National driver and three NASCAR Winston Cup drivers.

If Formula One drivers are truly the greatest driving talents in the world, why aren't there at least one active F1 driver competing in such a high profile international race as this? The only F1 teams that are testing around this time are McLaren and Ferrari. The Daytona road course that utilizes one of the 36 degree bank corners along with the night time stints, is an ultimate road racing test. Even the great Juan Manuel Fangio never liked night racing. Why? Because it is a very tough challenge being able to see at night and drive fast at the same time.

Because the Rolex is a shadow of its former self? Because driving a 5 year old R&S sucks when you can drive something cooler at Sebring or Le Mans?

Because its Grand-am? :D

There's only ONE CART driver

They probably arent allowed to either

I think they are just afraid of the dark, 36 degree banked corners and driving ahead of Dale Earnhardt really, especially going into the 36 degree banked corner at night ahead of him. Johnny Herbert raced there not so many years ago. The intimidator intimidated them, just scared them off.

heh the banking is flat, whats so big about that?

Whats going to be scary is later this year the series I used to compete in will be racing on the Daytona road course. Tube frame formula fords with sicks and wings is gonna be kinda nasty

I was at the track yesterday (PC members know why  ). Let me tell you the infield was crowded yesterday. I was really surprised. Hopefully attendance will be good. The weather forecast was supposed to be perfect but, now it is supposed to be cloudy.

Speedvision is really putting a lot of effort into this. They had people and camera everywhere yesterday.

I'm gonna try to go over at lunch time and check out what is going on. I'll let you know

The DNQers probably all had technical problems. Look at the 75th time, it's over a minute worse than the 74th. Good to see the Stanley Dickens team, and also Calle Rosenblad, in decent positions so far.

Ah Ross...don't be so critical! We're racing again, and that's what counts.

I have my official Coca-Cola NASCAR denim shirt on today. Guess you know who I'll be rooting for.

There's only one factory GTS team though :) However the deeper and more competitive the prototype field is, the more likely they are to run each other down

Yeah, that'll be the day that any F1 driver is intimidated by the "Intimidator." Please...

I'm gonna watch the 24 hours, but I agree that it is a shadow of its former self and thats probably why F1 drivers couldn't be bothered. Besides, F1 duty calls, and its more important that driving in this race. That, and perhaps contractual obligations.

I think the only time someone is going to have to worry about Dale Earnhardt is when he does a 180 in front of that someone after holding him up for three laps.

What happened to Audi? Did they decide not to contest Daytona? It was a surprise to see McNish in the Ferrari.
Also amazing to see Hans Stuck still going strong.

To be honest it is a surprise to see a 333 SP at all. That car is a proverbial grandmother... Still the most charismatic sound engine in the field, better even than the Judd V10, but it should not winning anything on pace alone.

I'm looking forward to this race, saddly tanja has a class Saturday, so she won't get to see the race until late Sat., but we'll get to see the end Sunday morning. Hope to see the GT1 qualify, I hope for a Corvette/Ferrari battle, though an R&S should be seen up front. The BMW should be great, 5.0L V8 if I'm not mistaken. Isn't this the first test of the 2002 Le Mans GT class BMW? If it is, this could be a car to watch.

And by th eway, read the Gurney Clark article this week, look at how many races, F1 and non-F1, they would cover in the Americas and Europe, and then compare that to todays racers. A very different time and place (especially if you think of the time of transporting back and forth).

I can't imagine what Daytona would be like with a bunch of LMP cars whipping through the field like cannonballs - the speed differential is so wide I can't see it would ever happen. Crash-o-rama!

But you have to admit racing a 333 SP at Daytona would be hell of a fine way to spend a few hours on a Saturday afternoon! Oh, MAMA!
