As I mentioned in the "introduce yourself" thread I intended to post a few images that had been taken at the Nürburgring during the late sixties and early seventies. Most of them are b/w and also most of these pictures are shots made by a friend of mine, Harry Michelbach. On 2 or 3 occasions I had joined him on the trip to the famous track in the Eifel - about an hour away from the place where we live. My camera equipment in the early days was pretty bad, so there are only very few pictures that I can contribute to this thread.

I will start with a shot taken at what I believe was the Eifelrennen in April 1967 when the winter had not yet come to an end. What you see is the field of Formula V cars at the end of the back straight and turning in the so-called "Nordkurve". This part of the old Nordschleife does no longer exist, but had been replaced with the new GP track in 1983/84. Note the white layer on the tarmac. There had been snow on the track hours before so obviously they had removed it very quickly.

I should mention that I have Harry's permission to post the pictures. In case a width of 1,200 p should be too wide then please let me know.

Another picture from what I believe happened on the same weekend. Everything that you see in the picture that is white is - yes - snow. Does anyone want to guess race class, car and driver? Shouldn't be too difficult in a forum like this one where I expect a lot of expertise.

Fantastic photo's of a Nurburgring I almost recognise despite the fact my only trip was in 1976.

I imagine the bags would have been full of salt or sand to clear the snow ?

But please, can you trim the pics down to 750 pixels or so? It's an absolute pain scrolling across and back to look at the text and the pics.

There are only a few in 1,200 p. Most of the others are 1,024 p which seems to be fine even for my small notebook. Would that be all right?

I am not 100% sure but yes, I would say so. Both took part in the '67 Eifelrennen.

750 pixels is the acknowledged regular 'unwritten' limit for pics on this forum...

In other words, it's the size that's a recommended maximum. On my screen, it's awkward when things go over about 900 pixels and 1200 is an absolute pain.

So keep the great pics coming, but please get the size down a bit.

It would be a good idea for this requirement to be included in the 'TNFs: Read Me' sticky at the top of the page, which it currently isn't.

The problem was that I had uploaded most of the pictures already. However, the server I'd chosen offers a way to reduce the size and store both copies.

I understand that images in upright format should be less than 800..850 p wide. So this is ~600 p and hopefully it works for this forum. It helps to introduce myself again, because of all the three people dressed in white you will certainly know two - and the unknown one is me. Großer Preis von Deutschland, 1968, the famous rain-and-fog Grand Prix that Sir Jackie Stewart calls the race of his life. The picture was taken in the paddock and on the Saturday between practice sessions.

Yes, the Porsche driver is Jo Siffert. More pics of him will follow ... and also one or two of Vic Elford.

Classic view of the Nürburg and the Nordkurve at the end of the back straight. It's the 1966 Grand Prix. I am not sure about car and driver, but I believe it is Ludovico Scarfiotti in the 2.4 l Ferrari.

Re the two drivers in post #17; I can't see anyone there that resembles Piers Courage.

I don't think I would question the Chris Irwin identification but Piers? Look at a picture of him, he certainly didn't have a round face.

I know it's a negative assertion but looking through the drivers that took part I can't actually say that the chap sitting on the tyre looks like anyone I recognise.

It could be, but Hahne was driving a (white) BMW and it is not very likely to see him sitting on the tire of a different car. I believe it is really Piers Courage. But again, I am not sure.

But if the identifications of the main photo on this page is correct, I'm now inclined to think it IS Courage or possibly Hahne.
