GOODWOOD CONFIRMS THEME FOR THE 2012 FESTIVAL OF SPEED THEME: ‘YOUNG GUNS – BORN TO WIN’
Further to the confirmation earlier this week of the 2012 dates for Goodwood’s ever-popular annual motoring events, Lord March can now confirm the theme for next year’s Festival of Speed.
The 2012 Festival of Speed theme (28 June-01 July) is ‘Young Guns – Born to Win’, celebrating drivers and riders and designers and engineers whose supreme talent and insatiable thirst for speed shocked the establishment, affording them immediate superstar status.
Throughout motor sport history, an elite group of newcomers have announced their arrival on the world stage with performances so stunning as to instantly rewrite the status quo. From Bernd Rosemeyer and Mike Hawthorn, to Emerson Fittipaldi and Lewis Hamilton, Mike Hailwood and Valentino Rossi, to Henri Toivonen and Colin McRae, all made an impact that was as immediate as it is indelible.
The 2012 Festival of Speed will celebrate the careers of these overnight sensations – some of whom fulfilled their full promise; others who shone briefly before fading; but all of whom secured their own special place in motor sport’s rich tapestry.
Alongside this central theme, the 2012 Festival will mark the 60th anniversary of Lotus Engineering. Inspired by the incomparable Colin Chapman, this small British company utilised unparalleled technical ingenuity to dominate all levels of motor sport, from club racing to Formula 1, creating a glorious and enduring legacy. A spectacular collection of winning Lotus cars, from F1, Indycars, saloons and sports cars, will be a key attraction at this year’s Festival.
The Festival of Speed will also feature a glittering array of cars and motorcycles from a huge variety of disciplines, further enhancing the Goodwood event’s reputation as the world’s greatest celebration of motor racing history and culture. Tackling the famous Goodwood hillclimb will be everything from early Grand Prix and endurance machines, to off-road and contemporary racers and racing motorcycles.
Complementing the overall Festival of Speed theme will be a host of other attractions at the 2012 Festival. Aside from getting close to the action-packed hillclimb and paddocks, Festival-goers will be able to admire some of the most stylish vehicles ever designed at the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ concours d’elegance, see and potentially try the very latest road cars at the Moving Motor Show exhibition, glimpse into the future of transportation at FoS-TECH, see many of motor sport’s famous faces up close, swoon at the mouth-watering display of supercars, witness the exciting sideways action on the Forest Rally Stage, and become a part of the action at the off-road activity fields and Junior Festival of Speed. The hugely popular GAS (Goodwood Action Sports) will return for 2012 as well.
Goodwood Festival of Speed founder Lord March says: “I am really looking forward to having so many great cars and drivers here at the Festival of Speed to celebrate our 2012 ‘Young Guns’ theme. For me it is always magical to see so many of the world’s greatest drivers, riders and machines in action.”
As in previous years, admission to the Festival of Speed, plus the Goodwood Revival (14-16 September) and Moving Motor Show (28 June) will be strictly by advance ticket only, with 2012 event tickets going on sale from 9am Monday 29 October.

How does the traffic compare on the Friday morning? I've never had a problem on Saturdays before because I leave the house at 4am and take the scenic TNF route, arriving at 7am with a clear run. Could I nab an extra couple of hours in bed and still avoid being stuck in jams, or do the reduced number of FOS attendees on Fridays get offset by more people going to work?

For the last few years the Friday TNF meet has been at the Startline Bar, but I'm happy to meet at Ted's if that suits more people. I'll be there on the Friday again. When does the roll call of TNF attendees happen...are we doing the tradional Friday 1pm meet at Ted's stand?

Sometimes I get confused between the FoS and the Revival - you're quite right, the meet is usually at the Startline Bar as I think Ted's stand doesn't do the FoS.

(b) 'big guns' on the driver front may not be there

It's generally less crowded on the Friday as
(a) a lot of people are at work and will be coming at the weekend
(b) 'big guns' on the driver front may not be there
Friday sold out last year, so theoretically all three days are attended in equal number, even though even less people are at work than this time last year.

Excellent, Gregor - looking forward to meeting you at the Friday get-together. I suggest we aim for our usual meeting spot on the right of the bar as you approach it from the front (or on the left if you're standing inside looking out).

But if Bob Bondurant should be there, it would be great if someone who has access could ask him if he has any good anecdotes about the filming of 'Grand Prix'........
I look forward to seeing all the superb photos many of you will take over the weekend, and wish you luck with the weather - hopefully Lord March will have sacrificed the usual virgins or whatever he does to try to ensure blue skies.
Hopefully I might see you all at the Revival.

If anyone is interested £40 - first come first served, by PM.
The ticket would need to be picked up from Halnaker, just to the east of Goodwood, or alternatively at the FoS tomorrow.

There was a lot of money about todayBonhams are selling the George Daniels collection
The 1908 GP Itala went for £ 1,737,500 including commission which seems exceptional until you look at the next lot but one:
The Birkin Bentley 1929-31 single seater went for £ 5,041,500 and
The Birkin/Howe Le Mans 1932 8C Alfa Romeo went for £ 2,689,500
at those prices will we ever see them race again?
I suppose we just have to be pleased that we did see them race

I was spectating at the auction. I was surprised that the 1908 Itala did not get a higher bid - that will probably cause a re-think on Mark Walker's 1908 Panhard if it has not already sold. Equally surprised that the 2.3 Alfa did not go higher - as a mate said, it would have got more if RM had auctioned it in the US.
The pattern of bidding for the Birkin Bentley was extraordinary - after a run of bids advancing the price by £50,000 or £100,000 a phone bidder came on and bid up a £0.5M step - twice ! Clearly determined to get the car. Wonder who it was ? I would be very sorry if it left the country.
Most of the rest of the cars sold and at (for today) fairly normal prices. Some looked like a bargain ... the T46 Bugatti sold for £180,000 which I though looked like a very good purchase.

It's hard to resist the W125's little details.
Tony Brooks in the Syracuse Connaught. I'd hoped to tell him how much I enjoyed "Poetry In Motion" but was outflanked by autograph hunters.
Maserati 151/3. Last time I saw this, it was a crumpled heap beside the Mulsanne straight after Casner's fatal crash. It's hoped it will be running at the Revival.
Lunchtime gathering at the Startline bar. A half-decent photographer would not chop off a TNFer's feet but at least Condor's beer can came out reasonably well.
Didn't do much on the hill this year, as I always seemed to be in a Paddock when the most exciting stuff was running. Maybe too ambitious to try to do it all in a single day?
