I have read in Autosport that there is going to be a senior F1 drivers championship, similar to the senior master tournaments in Tennis and the provisional calendar has been drawn up for 2002.
Only officially retied F1 driver are allow to enter, the circuits include Monnaco Estoril and Silverstone and none of the races will clash with the F1 races and are to be screened on TV…..Maybe the officially retire Murrary Walker may even commentate:)

What are your thoughts on this?

I would really enjoy something like this. This brings us to a new quesion I suppose: who is the fastest retired driver?

I doubt many of the really great drivers would be willing to go back to racing.

Been there, done that.

I belive each team will only belive to have a buget of £ million....also Lotus have been asked if they are interested.
And if its safe the FIA have give the thumbs up....John Watson is up for it too, as he said in the artical.

Mario is sure to be there...

I wouldn't say Monaco won't clash with the WDC race, it takes weeks for them to set up the track and take it down, it must happen on that weekend... maybe the Friday?

And Emmo? And Stirling Moss??? Dan Gurney? Nigel Mansell? Alain Prost? Alan Jones?

I for one would love to see some of the retired greats racing again. Hey if Prost got involved he could even bring his own car :D

Cool
Glad there will be a round at Silverstone :)

I think the best retired drivers that still race are Jack Brabham and Stirling Moss. Id like to see Stewart and Hill having a go too :)

I'm not sure how racy such a series would be. This would be a fun gig for them, not something their careers depend on. I think watching such a race would be similar to a vintage event. But for those, the cars are the starz.

Maybe they will bang fenders or wheels at speed, but I think that would be the exception rather than the rule.

It would be ideal if they were in F1 cars of a single era so the focus could be more on the driver differential.

By the way, in the US someone (forgot the URL) is trying to start a series where you can rent-a-drive F1 cars. Sounds like it's similar to the BOSS series.

This looks like a variant of the premierF1 plan.Which was to run Dallara 4 litres, simlar in power to real F1,and all sponsored by football teams. Can't think of 24 retired F1 drivers who would want to do it. More like a mix of ex F3000 & dumped drivers like Dela Rosa ,Herbert Blundell, etc.
As to the Monaco round ,last year they had a historic meeting the weekend before the GP,and presumably kept the barriers .etc up for a fortnight.

I agree, Ali-G.
Could you imagine Piquet and Mansell going at it again?
And Damon Hill?
And... why not, if the car is enought easy to handle... mister Andrea Nicolaus Lauda!

This is a great idea. I think as long as they use generic spec cars. I dont think though we should expect a huge supply of ex-champions. Im sure there will be no lack in available drivers. But there are over 600 ex-F1 drivers, so Im sure you can find 20 or so to enter. But I hope they have something saying they have to had raced in X amoutn of races and have retired say atleast 5-10 years ago.
