Can someone explain to me the lighted map of the circuit on the tower. It always show a partial map of the track that changes with every lap. Is that where the leaders are? I think the Nordschliefe also used the same type of thing for Grand Prix when they were held there.

I have a copy of the Monza 1922 - 1952 Fifty Years of History book.

It says that two signalling towers were built in 1955, at the same time as the new banked track was completed. Each tower was 16m high with luminous signalling boards of over 30 sq mtrs on the sides, visible in sunlight from both sides of the entire pit straight. The upper part shows the number of laps completed by the leader & the circuit plan lights up in sections as he/she proceeds around the circuit. The leader's number & average speed up to the last lap are shown below the plan whilst the numbers of the second & third placed competitors & their distances behind the leader are shown on the lower part. Each board has 900 light bulbs controlled by relays & a keyboard (I'm assuming on/off keys thrown on a board to activate the relays) & the system operators used telephone links to communicate with the timekeepers for the next update. The system was also capable of showing class positions in a multi class race.

The book is Monza 1922 - 1972 Fifty Years of History, published by Autodromo Nazionale di Monza in 1972, in Italian & English & covers all of the circuit layouts, lighting for night events, both cars & bikes etc. Long out of print, I've had mine since the late 70's. I did a Monza History search on Amazon & it came up top of the page, however there are a number of more recent Monza History books.
