Sonny, just how faster were the 1990's GT1 class over the 2000 GT1 class ?
While I know the McLaren F1 won LeMans, it certainly wasn't as fast as the WSC cars. It's debateable whether the 98 cars were even GT cars given how far from reality they were.
Well you know, just take a look at 1998 LM quali for example - GT1 pole was about 24 seconds faster than the leading GT2(/GTS) Viper's. And although the new GTS/GT1 grew with the arrival of new models such as C5-R in next the following years it didn't get that much faster. The fastest it ever got were the first years of C6.R vs DBR9 when the cars were not only making same speed on straights as the much more expensive prototype machinery but were also almost capable of scoring overall podiums at Le Mans, partly thanks to crappy LMP2 reliability. Too bad they started to slow them down eventually
Yes, "old" GT1 cars were perhaps not the fastest ever but still prototypes with GT bodywork, and production cars were only produced a minimal amount so that the racing models could be homologated. Hence one of the reasons why the class died quickly... the death of "new" GT1 was down to numerous reasons as well
