Ice-racing in Sweden 1954. Some 500cc "midgets", a BMW-Veritas, a HRG and a Allard.
Exotic or not?

Might the Citroen, briefly glimpsed at 1'18, have been driven by young Bonnier?

Wonder if anyone has any footage of this exotic on ice in 1957 ?

That would certainly be something, wouldn't it?

We had some ice racing videos linked here before, they were older, from memory, but staggering good things.

That does look like fun-we've had a mild winter here so I've not had my fill of powersliding around parking lots this year!

Quite a variety of cars out there too-what looks like 500s, as well as road cars. I'd consider them exotics-the only one I've ever seen in real life is an Allard J2!

Ice-racing was big in Sweden during the cold winters in the Fifties. There were races all over the country between January and March. An easy way to build tracks.
The film is actually several films put together from different races in 1954.

You wouldn't find Bonnier in a Citroen in 1954. In the winter of '54 he raced with a HRG and a Peugeot. He never raced a Citroen (the only time he competed with a Citroen, was with his father's car in a gymkhana in Stockholm).

No, it would be hard to find. There were only a couple of ice-races in 1957. Very late in the season way up in the northern part of the country and there were no Ferraris. All beacuse of the petrol rationing after the Suez crisis. The first Swedish ice-championship was in the winter of 1958.

The info about 1957 came from the Danville Concours d'Elegance board linked here, I will amend the blog.

Thanks for pointing out the error Tomas

I read (many years ago) that he had started his motor-sport career in a Citroen...

Well it was right, but it wasn't a race and it was in 1948. By '54 he was 24 and had started his own car dealership in the centre of Stockholm. Selling Peugeot... and Alfa-Romeo. The rest is history...
