Simple question: will the 2000 Honda engine be a totally new design, or will it be based upon the Mugen unit?

Well, I heard that Mugen Honda is a completely different engine than what BAR will use, read it in F1 Racing.

I seem to recall some rumors from a while ago that said that Honda may be developing a V12. If they decide to use it, that unit will be run by BAR. Jordan would use a Mugen-Honda V10, which I guess would be a development of this year's engine.
I also heard that Honda may supply a 3rd team, (with the V10) maybe Prost. Anyone else hear this?

Well actually, when Honda first announced its intention to enter F1, they asked Mugen for a couple of engines fo their own use. It might be that the BAR engine next year will be a step ahead of Jordans engine.

Honda own a big chunk if not all of Mugen, so they will be working close together.
The V12 is an unconfirmed rumour, although is is thought to be certain that Honda will have done theoretical studies of the benefits of a 12.
The rumour about Mugen engines for Prost is a bit far fetched IMO. Just wild speculation of where Prost will get any engine if Peugot pull out. (Maybe TWR will sell him the Hart!

There are some very expensive technologies now developed that minimize the frictional losses of a V-12. These losses negated the ability of a 12 to rev higher than an 8 or a 10. Hence the move by some teams to lock in to a V-10 formula....cost savings. It's worth noting that the 1992 Honda was a V-12.

Prost and Supertec were rumored to be negoiting a deal but recently Prost said that he was not going to give that kind of money for an engine because it would take away too much of his budget for the chassis.
Honda did run a V12 not only in 1992 but also in 1991 when Senna won his last title.
When the turbos were banned, Honda considered a V8 and a V12, but decided to go with the V10 for 1989 and 1990.
