i think they cut the tyre themselves, the rear has horiztonal groves in, to get forward bite

In the pits it looks like cut rain tyres, but I think most of the driving is done with normal winter tyres.
I guess they found out pretty quickly that those wide rain tyres are useless in snow.

for fresh snow, spreading the weight might be better.
they could of used other tyres to get the ride height higher

guess it depends on the type of snow, and if you got spikes, with spikes narrow tyres is the way to go as you want the weight of the car to force the spikes into the ground

Tell me about it! I have way too wide studded tyres in my own car, 245 rear and 225 front. They are useless when it's slippery. Fortunately ABS and ESP are working well nowadays.
They are pretty handy in deep snow though, keeping the car from sinking too deep.
Of course I still wouldn't use narrow tyres, because they look silly.

On snow? Though come to think of it, the circuit is called the Snaefell Mountain Course and Snaefell derives from the Norse word for snow!I raise you both the Isle of Man TT.

thats what studded tyres give you, a surprising amount of grip, like near tarmac levels
The Swedish Rally on snow and ice usually has the highest average speed of the year including tarmac events.

Have a look at the wheels, one has center locks and the other has 4 stud wheels and the tyres are different.
