I have always been fascinated by racing engines, ever since I was a small boy. Whenever a bonnet was lifted in the pits I was always the first there to have a look. I was inspired by Dick Willis posting his shots of early Holdens a little while back and thought this thread might bring out some interesting pics.
Here are a few favourites from the oldracephotos library to kick things off.

I have a few engine photos that might be of interest. These were taken during the restoration of the Ellen Lohr 1994 DTM car.

Glad you like them. I'll dig some more out but I'll be sure not to hog the thread. I'm not normally one for posting much but this looks like it could be really interesting.

A reminder that conditions are not always squeaky clean or warm when an engine needs to be replaced, I believe the Georg Loos mechanics are preparing to install a fresh 3.2 litre motor into the #3 Fitzpatrick/Heyer/Wollek 935/77a the evening before they won the Silverstone 6 Hours.

Splendid idea for a thread but perhaps some cross-over with the "details-only" thread photos. Maybe they should be merged? Maybe not?

Great stuff coming, but this is one I would have actually asked for...

Bob Jane's alloy-engined 7-litre monster from 1970-71. But this is not the original!

I'm certain that when I perved on it in the pits at Warwick Farm the alloy rocker covers had the 'Bob Jane Racing Division' cast into them. This must be of the re-created car?

I just looked at pics of the original engine in Giant Killers magazine and it is exactly the same except for the breathers between the rocker covers,,, and everything is a bit shinier!

Yes Ray, taken at P.I. 2008, just after the restoration was finished I think. Thunder427 who posts on here from time to time would probably be able to provide more info, I recall he posted about it some time back.

Penske built their own engines in Reading, VDS serviced all the other teams up to 1998.

Fascinating! I never saw pictures of that engine, it certainly was revolutionary. But that isn't the NR500 engine, is it, wasn't that a 4 "cylinder" (christ! this engine gives new meaning to the word "cylinder" itself!!!)?

EDIT It does appear to be a V4, though - I always figured it to be inline.

Are these photos period or later?

My suspicion is that the rocker covers on this engine are much more modern than 1973.

And is there any info on the Rex Ramsey Shadow engine? I would seriously appreciate an e.mail (click on the address below) about this pic ASAP.

That is a current photo, the fabricated sheetmetal rocker covers, the proprietry alloy pressure cap bottle. And the modern Avons all give that away.
In fact all those pics are modern photos of historic cars.

Agreed!
There just seems to be a lack of brass in modern racing engines, just all that boring aluminium. When I say modern the last 80 years or so!

And it is a magic drag racing pic of it launching.

I honestly do not know - a friend sent me the photo without details. I thought it looked pretty radical and that someone here may be able to fill us in.

According to Herb Andrews at UK Drag Racing Nortalgia the owner
is Jim Busby. As I´m not an expert on drag racing someone more
qualified perhaps would like to add further information.

Apparently the engines were Ford Indy V8´s.

Some details (and another photo) on this page on the 1971 Winternationals:

Jim Busby won the Best Engineered Car award for his twin-engine, naturally aspirated dragster powered by fuel-injected DOHC Ford Indy Car-style engines. Hank Westmoreland, the 1969 Springnationals Top Fuel winner, drove the car but was unable to qualify in what would be its only race.

and there are some reminiscences from Busby himself here:

You blokes should be hanging your heads in shame!

Who can't recognise an Indy Ford quad-cam engine at first sight?
