Hamilton is but a shadow of his 2007 self, beating him over the past two years just doesn't put Jenson in the top tier.

 Yep and he was worse in 2007 than he was in 1987.

Obviously a British voting base on that site!

Don't you find bias ironic?

I'm sure Jenson can do a good impression of someone else if asked ;)
Out of interest, who does Lewis pretend to be? Is it someone famous?

Kudo's to Button for convincingly beating Hamilton, he has been the better driver without a doubt. But imo using this to place Button in the same class as Vettel in 2011 is too much of a stretch. Hamilton is but a shadow of his 2007 self, beating him over the past two years just doesn't put Jenson in the top tier.

Now if he wins the wdc this season ..... well that might be a different story!

Wow Jenson beat Lewis in 2010 now as well, this just gets better :stoned:

"Fresh" is the keyword indeed. Now add "in the team". :D

That alone accounts for not being at the absolute maximum. Both Alonso and Button performed remarkably well right from the start at their new working place, but the last ounce of performance only comes when a driver is really settled in his environment. You only have to listen to how much Button stresses the importance of that in the interviews.

I seem to recall Lewis was a rookie but dare i digress?

IcySkyrim, check out the F1fanatic article that accompanies that poll - they even discuss why the top three vote getters are the Brit drivers:

"The three most popular drivers are all British – perhaps unsurprising as 35% of site visits come from the UK. Our second-largest group of users – the 10% from the USA – don’t have a corresponding American driver to cheers on."

Their base, as I have seen many times reflected in polls and opinion on that site in the past, is very much skewed towards favouring all things British. They even admit to it here so you shouldn't argue to much!

Not to sure what you are up to here tifosiMac??

No irony, both are just valid and true observations! Lewis is a shadow of his 2007 self and the f1fanatic poll is skewed favouring the Brit drivers.

The poll does show unsurprisingly that Button is the most loved brit driver at the moment. What is a bit surprising though is how close di Resta is to Hamilton after only one rather average season in F1. Lewis will have to keep an eye on him in this threeway battle for the British fanbase.

Exactly... 65% of votes comes from outside UK.

Therefore the fact that Jensen and Lewis are leading doesn't come from the fact they are English [correlation].
And among the 35% of UK votes we also have Scottish and Irish votes too, that doesn't mean necessarilly an English vote.

Kamui has a big base of fans
Heikki is ahead of Kimi

You should take this up with the owner of the fanatics site who points out that this is the case!

And do you really think that di Resta is the third most popular driver in F1?

Wow, what a representative poll. Wait this comes from F1Fanatic...? Lol

No seriously, when you do this on a worldwide scale (independent) you will see that Schumacher has the most fans (still), followed by Alonso. The rest doesn't even come close. I think that sums op popularity pretty much.

Somebody is hacking my autosport account.

I never started this thread topic.

The mods must have split it from someone else, it even says [split] in the thread title...

And I think that poll would have been much better in percentages. Out of 4,791 users:

1) 13.3% - Jenson Button
2) 9.7% - Lewis Hamilton
3) 6.9% - Paul di Resta
4) 6.8% - Michael Schumacher
5) 6.7% - Mark Webber
6) 6.7% - Kamui Kobayashi
7) 6.2% - Fermando Alonso
8) 5.8% - Robert Kubica
9) 5.3% - Sebastian Vettel
10) 32.6% - OTHER

And besides, 4,791 users is a much bigger user base than polls that get about 500 votes on here. (although as Keith notes in the comments Schumi's gone up to 3rd)

And for the other poll out of 2,517 users:

1) 26.5% - McLaren
2) 12.5% - Ferrari
3) 9.7% - Mercedes
4) 9.6% - Red Bull
5) 9.4% - Lotus*
6) 8.0% - Sauber
7) 7.9% - Williams
8) 7.5% - Force India
9) 3.8% - Caterham*
10) 2.7% - Toro Rosso
11) 1.9% - HRT
12) 0.5% - Maurissa

* note that when it was changed over to 2012, Caterham fans would have been attached to 'Lotus' because of the naming confusing, so in reality Caterham's may be higher

Most popular? Well Button doesn't have half the world acclaim that either Alonso, Schumacher or Hamilton has so can this be approprately named. Has the meaning for popular changed or its traditional meaning of 'most well known' is not applicable here

The page is saying that only 35% of the audience comes from UK.

So 65% is from outside UK.

Does anyone remember the FOTA F1 fans survey in 2010? That's the one I was mainly referring to. More than 90.000 F1 fans took part and Schumacher got the absolute most votes, followed by Alonso and Kimi was 3th. Mind that it was held just after the comeback of Schumacher and Kimi leaving the sport. Unfortunately its as close to independent as you will get. Look it up. I'd like to hear it if someone thinks there's an even better/representative (recent) poll/survey/research... I need it for a project.

Strong evidence. In Febuary 2010, F1racing magazine teamed up with FOTA to conduct the worlds biggest F1 fans survey which consisted of 90,000 votes from 180 different countries.

The results for 'Which driver do you support'

Schumacher 19.5%
Alonso 9.7
Kimi 7.2
Massa 6.1
Hamilton 6.0
Kubica 4.3
Button 2.6
Webber 2.0
Vettel 1.7
Rubens 1.5

A far more credible survey than F1 fanatic.

I'm not doubting the plausibility of the results, I'm doubting that any of these polls have a representative number of people from each country. You'd need data of poll respondents per capita, or something like that.

Still mostly British compared to everyone else, most of which don't even have drivers from their respective nationalities on the grid. You'd need some data from the actual poll itself rather than the site anyway, but obviously there's a heavy British bias going on. I don't know why people are acting all offended anyway.

The results really aren't worth taking seriously from a British blog site, someone just posted a FOTA survey which is much more worthwhile.

Just to clarify things...

This post was originally placed in a supporting hole in the Jenson vs Lewis thread.

And pool results are quite surprinsing anyway.
When Autosprint conducted their "Who is the best driver that ever drove for Ferrari ?" pool, the winner was Il Leone Nigel Mansell.
So the Tifosi elected a Briton.

Tbh I'm surprised Alonso isn't nearer the top! I know he showed Machiavellian streak during 2007, but let's face it who doesn't love a good villain . It's the same in movies, the Joker is a much more interesting character than boring old Batman, and the thing about Alonso is that he has the charm to make him hard to dislike. He's the kind of man your parents would love if you brought him home with you (no homo!). Besides that he's a heavyweight of F1, 2xWDC, a mercurial talent that beat off Schumacher and Aamildon and the figurehead of Ferrari. He's also as good as a deity for Spanish fans. If Spain ever got around to getting internet I'm sure his position would be even higher :p

But everyone around the world does not visit UK based sites to vote. there are 5 million viewers of F1 at any given race (live and televised), so 300-400 voters is hardly representative of the world. Besides, when all the Brits are on top, you have to be ducking your held while suggesting that might be the case, imo.

I'm Brazilian (portuguese 1st language) and i visit F1 Fanatic for hi-res pics, not much else.
They only allow registered users to vote, i never bothered to register for one, so only the regulars from that site vote.
That pool isn't any more abrangent than doing one in these forums.
