It was a great weekend at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California this past weekend. The crowds were high and so were the hopes.

Ryan Briscoe was the fastest driver during the first session and Will Power boasts the fastest speed during the second session. Below is some of the times posted at Sonoma...

Driver & Car # / Lap Time

Day 1

1. #2 Ryan Briscoe / 1:17.49
2. #12 Will Power / 1:17.83
3. #28 Ryan Hunter-Reay / 1:18.43
4. #5 EJ Viso / 1:18.50
5. #4 JR Hildebrand / 1:18.73
6. #11 Rubens Barrichello / 1:18.91

Day 2

1. #12 Will Power / 1:16.98
2. #2 Ryan Briscoe / 1:17.02
3. #5 EJ Viso / 1:17.36
4. #11 Rubens Barrichello / 1:17.88
5. #28 Ryan Hunter-Reay / 1:17.89
6. #11 Tony Kanaan / 1:17.91
7. #4 JR Hildebrand / 1:17.97

Just to give you an idea on the speeds of this new car compared to the previous Dallara..

Dario Franchitti has the indycar track record at Infineon with a lap time of 1:16.47. Last year's pole speed in qualifying was a 1:18.8 set by Will Power on the alternate red tires. We could see some low 16's come race time.

First question is, were they running the same track configuration as when the 1:18.8 was set?

I don't know but the new Dallara has been widely quoted to be faster than the old car on road courses (and not so much on the ovals). The old Dallara, which was designed back when all the road courses in America cowered before Cristiano da Matta's Lola.

Presumably. I watched the onboard shots of Rubens testing and he was on the normal Indy Circuit they always use.

DanicaFan: Will you be doing the honours for starting Indycar race threads this season? :)

Well, one thing is pretty clear from those results.

Viso > Barrichello > Kanaan.

By that logic, Kobayashi should be a favourite for the WDC in the Sauber this year...

who knows what programme each of them are really doing apart from KV themselves?

Did you get the < and the > confused again?

Rubens was learning the track, and still getting to grips with the car and Kanaan had half a days worth of testing. And you don't even know what sort of runs each driver was doing.

Seeing as Viso is incapable of finising a race his speed doesn't really matter :)
