The decathlon is a combined event in athletics consisting of ten track and field events. Traditionally, the title of "World's Greatest Athlete" has been given to the man who wins the decathlon. If there was a decathlon event in motorsports, what would the disciplines be?

How about:

1. Auto racing - Formula
2. Auto racing - Stock car
3. Auto racing - Rallying
4. Auto racing - Off-road
5. Motorcycle - Roadracing
6. Motorcycle - Speedway
7. Motorcycle - Motocross
8. Motorcycle - Enduro
9. Powerboat
10.Snowmobile

What's your take on these? IMO Air racing and even Motorcycle trials should be excluded for being too niche. You could argue Kart or Downhill cart should be there, but I'm not sure if they really bring anything new to the table.

And oh yeah, I nearly forgot: who would be the "best of the rest" after Kimi?

Teams should be responsible for creating their own machine for each event. Lets see HRT try and make it through the season...

As you can see it doesn't matter. Vettel is the world's greatest driver. He has 29,770 points after all.

Did think about a similar idea myself, maybe four stages (Quadathron?) road car, off-road car, road motorcycle, off-road motorcycle.

This idea is trotted out every few years or so...

I am a BIG fan of a multi-discipline World Championship.

To me, it's just a matter of time before some format of this idea is brought to reality.

Doubt Lotus would let their drivers enter any such event! I'm sure there's not a single motorsport fan in the World that wouldn't be glued to the screen if Hamilton, Alonso, Vettel, Schumacher, Raikonnen and Loeb were all given spec Ford Fiesta's and let loose at Brands Hatch in the rain. It'll never happen though :(

Btw I'd add karting to your championship, one of the most fun and intense forms of motorsport to watch.

Sky? BBC? Nah. I just sit refreshing my browser until my mouse breaks and/or the rankings update.

Castrol edge rankings are awesome, fact. It's like pokemon with racing drivers.

Snowmobile, motocross... What? You totally forgot sports and touring cars from that list, two of the most important categories...

Here are my 10 selected categories:

Cars

1. Open wheel (F1 Championship)
2. Rallying (World Rally Championship/IRC)
3. Enduro (24h du Mans, or Dakar)
4. Touring cars (DTM/WTCC)
5. Sports cars (GT1 World Championship/V8 Supercars)

Motorcycles

6. Circuit Racing (Motogp/WSBK)
7. Dirtcross
8. Enduro (Daytona 24h)

Other

9. Truck Racing (FIA European Championship)
10. Powerboat

I don't see the need to include any off-road racing since WRC/Dakar/Dirtcross will test a driver's ability to drive/ride on something other than asphalt. For some categories I have two championships because while one championship might be viewed as being the top one in the respective category, the other usually provides closer racing because the driver pool is better

Mine would probably be very similar to S3baman's. I'd replace no. 5 with Karting and make Sports cars an alternative to Touring cars.

Open wheel racing should include at least one street track and one normal course. Rallying should include at lest one tarmac, gravel and snow rounds.

Endurance car racing would be a problem, with it's many classes.

We should probably consider adding oval racing to the mix - as a nod towards America.

There was a thread about versatile drivers over on The Nostalgia Forum last year, which covered similar ground. My nominations were:

Danny Ongais, a three-time AA Dragster Champion who also raced in CART, IRL, F1, sportscars and on motorbikes; and

Dan Gurney, who in 1967 raced in Nascar in the USA, USAC (IndyCar) in the USA, F1 in South Africa, Monaco, Holland, Belgium, France, UK. Germany, Canada, Italy, USA and Mexico, the Le Mans 24 hour race in France, and Trans-Am in the USA. During that year he won 1 USAC race, two F1 races, the Le Mans 24 hour race and 1 Trans-Am race. Going beyond 1967, you can add drag racing, Bonneville salt racing and winning the first "Cannonball Run" in a Ferrari Daytona (downtown Manhattan to Redondo Beach, California in 35 hours 54 minutes) to his accomplishments.

Motorcycles should include proper road racing like the Isle of Man TT.

What about some speedway as well? That'd be nuts. Bring it on!
