It was May the 1st in 1994, like today. The Tamburello claims the life of another Legend of motorsport: Ayrton Senna.

We all here know him so I think there's no point in speaking about him because his career and acheivements speak for him. He raced the best in his era: the likes of Mansell, Prost, Piquet and he claimed 3 titles in his 10 years career.

Rest in peace Ayrton, F1 will miss you forever.

Not only did I lose the driver that could have genuinely challenged Schumacher for 1994 WDC title, I lost the driver that I had just recently gotten to support even over my Finnish country mates (I wasn't wishing anything ill on them and Hakkinen's rise in performance, certainly in part due to his car, wasn't bringing me anything but joy) but Senna was the driver that my attention was mostly focused on in 1994. His fatal crash made the season quite empty for me.

Indeed also remembering Alboreto who died 11 years ago last week as well as Senna and Ratzenberger. I'm sure Villeneuve will get plenty of mentions next week too.

me neither :(

RIP Roland, Senna - what an awful weekend that was. But it's a testament to their character, talent and influence on the sport that we are still thinking of them now.

No matter how much time passes, I still want to rewind the clock. But probably more drivers lives have been saved as a result that weekend than any other that came before it.

RIP Ayrton!

RIP also to all those who were lost in my time of watching:

Depailler
Gilles
Ricardo Paletti (in Montreal in 1982)
Elio (in a sad testing accident at Ricard)
Stefan Bellof
Winklehock (at Mosport down the road from here)
Roland Ratzenberger
and, of course,
Michele

And not forgetting:

Greg Moore
Gonzalo Rodriguez
Dan Wheldon
and
Marco Simoncelli

RIP to all...

They were taken way too early and will never be forgotten.

What a terrible weekend that was. From Rubens' accident on Friday, to Roland & Ayrton's death on the following two days. RIP, Ayrton & Roland.

Must've been damn painful for Rubens to see his mentor and friend die like that while he was in the hospital. Especially considering Rubens' crash was worse.

RIP Roland and Ayrton, you will not be forgotten. Though I won't go as far as to say that Ayrton was the GoAT.

I saw a youtube video which had an interview with Rubens a few years back where he said that his memory from the whole weekend was actually pretty hazy due to his accident, which was lucky in a way because yes, painful thing to remember.

Senna's death really was a watershed moment in Formula One, just think how different the sport may well be today had he walked away from the accident. Someone taken far too soon.

Every May 1st, I keep feeling like it just happened - and I keep wanting to turn back time and go get him out of that car. RIP Ayrton, and every driver that went before and after him.

Arguably the saddest thing, how Roland is almost forgotten.

RIP to them both.

I don't think the tragedy of Roland's death is almost forgotten. He is frequently (almost always) mentioned when Imola 1994 is discussed. Nevertheless, he was less well known than Ayrton and considerably less embedded in the history of F1 so the two will not have equal prominence in F1 discussions.

RIP Ayrton and Roland.

18 years ago one brilliant driver met his destiny. May his soul rest in peace.
His death though marks not the end but the start of a legend.

Such a long time has passed, yet feels like yesterday. We were all devastated in our household, my Dad in particular - first losing his hero Gilles, and then in the same month years later losing his new hero, Aryton. I loved to watch Senna drive, even though I was young. And to lose Ratzenberger too, such a black weekend.

I am thinking of them both on this sad day - RIP Roland and Aryton.

As a Schumacher fan, I'd admit that Ayrton is the greatest driver of all time, no doubt about it.

That was one of the things I loved most about the Senna movie...they could have just focused on Senna that weekend, and glossed over Roland, but they didn't. They gave Roland due time, and even some footage of him I'd never seen before.

From Bruno's Twitter:

@BSenna: 1st of May here in Mugello testing. Valtteri's in the car today. Saudades Ayrton. You keep inspiring me every step of the way.
