I noticed that in the TV coverage stream they start the counter when the car stops in the pit and stop it when the car starts going again...

IMO that's not the best way because it doesn't take into account the hability of the driver to stop the car and to start going again.

The best way IMO would be to just substract the time it takes to do a "drive-through" to the total pitlane time they take to make a pitstop, this way maybe we would be seeing 5-6 seconds pitstops but it would have included everything except the time they are on the pitlane limiter.

What do you think?

They also show the total time in the pitlane as well which I think gives you the information you want?

They show both times already.

Time in pit lane is probably the most important, though I'm not sure how it is supposed to show an indication of the drivers ability.

Time in pitlane is probably more accurate, as I always have the feeling that a small measuring mistake for the pure pitstop time can distort the information (in a pitstop of 4 seconds, half a second is a lot already).

With the pit lane time being measured electorically and precisely, it is probably the better indicator. However, after decades of looking at pure pitstop times, it takes getting used to comparing pit lane times.

That's why they should just show the result of "pitlane time-drive through"

ex: 21.234-14.5 (time it takes to do a drive through with the limiter) = 6.734s (pitstop time with the time it takes the driver to stop the car and get going again included)

I see your point and think its a good idea. The info not provided to us at the moment is how long a drive-through on the limiter takes, so we are unable to do the calculation ourselves.

even if you measure it like this you still miss the way the driver attacks the pitlane :)
so you're back to square 1

But I think it still gives you a better idea than what we have now, and I find it also more accurate...

I see no problem here. The purpose of the pitstop time is really to show the speed the team works at, which is far more interesting to me than making a calculation based around the driver.

I agree with some of the other posters, the pit-stop is a team thing, Driver included.

That's what they do on my TV.

if you want attack the pit entrance included, they could do final sector time to pit exit line

That would be good, I'd even take it all the way to the end of sector 1 as you get the time it takes them to get back up to speed.
