This morning's Brazilian Stockcar race was the last one on that track that hosted many F1 and Moto GP races amongst many other series...

A.K.A. Nelson Piquet autodrome -- as Interlagos is José Carlos Pace -- I'll miss it even though in the last 10 years or so it was abandoned by Rio de Janeiro governments and became even somewhat dangerous.

Farewell Jacarepaguá!

Very sad to hear. While it had practically no elevation change, it was a circuit I quite liked.

It was butchered a number of years ago with only 2/3s of the circuit being used for years. RIP.

That's a shame, it's always bad to see a nice old circuit destroyed, all the more so when its destruction is for the benefit of inferior types of sports like the Olympics.

Someone should post some old pics here and remind us of what we've lost

All in the name of progress I suppose.. I was lucking enough to attend the last F1 race there in 89'... Got some really good pics of Senna & Prost when I was in the Mclaren garage over the weekend.. It was my 1st overseas race.. The memories are still very strong for me..

A great track - I visited only once, and on that occasion drove at kart race at the adjunct kart
circuit. Amazing experience, the heat, the humidity, but also the undeniable motorsport flair.

Not only F1, but also Moto GP had some remarkable races there.

Brazilian GP 1982: Gilles Villeneuve (Ferrari), Alain Prost (Renault), Johnny Watson (McLaren), Nigel Mansell (Lotus), Michele Alboreto (Tyrrell), Manfred Winkelhock (ATS), Didier Pironi (Ferrari), Nelson Piquet (Brabham), Keke Rosberg (Williams)....so many great stars

(watch Gilles lose the car, under pressure from Piquet, at 4:30, Patrese retiring because of the heat at 4:55, and then Piquet almost passing out at the podium at the end of the video).

Piquet wins in 1983

Piquet 1st Senna 2nd, in 1986.

So many great memories. So long Jacarepagua

Greg Moore passes Zanardi on the outside to win the 1998 Rio 400.

Last lap of the 1999 500cc Brazilian Grand Prix -- Abe, Biaggi and Roberts, Jr all lead at one stage :D

...And Alex Barros having a typical Brazilian-sportsman-on-home-soil moment in 2004;)

Well indeed it wasn't the most inspiring of circuits but it had a few cracking races especially the 82 one linked above.

Actually the link above isn't working so here it is again:

Some classic picyures:

Edit: Just to remember that this weekend we'll have the last GT3 race, the last national series to race on the track. But IIRC, we'll still have some regional races until the end of the year.

Just had to note the comment: All within the space of about 10 years - Greg Moore died tragically. Zanardi lost his legs. Reynard went bankrupt and CART went bankrupt twice. Finally, the Rio track is completely gone.

Will this not be the location for much of the Olympic park in 2016? Feels so strange that all that sporting history has been erased to create more sporting history.

There will be five Olympics sports held at the area AFAIK: Basketball, handball, wrestling, judo and taekwondo, the last two being in the same building.

Wow, i have swung from hating the Olympics to loving them, and now back again in the space of 3 weeks.

What an emotional rollercoaster!

Funny how circuits become classics, especially when they're destroyed.

I had not seen the Rio circuit before, and shall not be seriously concerned if I never do again. It is a flat and featureless white elephant of a place at which to spectate and, apparently, to drive. - Nigel Roebuck, 1982 (from the Brazilian GP report in the 1982 section - subscribers only http://plus.autospor...2-brazilian-gp/ )

It's amazing what a history of GPs can do for a place. Must also remember than the track was in a very passionate country. Something which can't be said of the likes of Bahrain or Abu Dhabi. Finally, the scenery there was simply stunning. Up there with Austria for such a setting.

What sort of scenery will the new circuit have btw ?

The new track will be in a region called Deodoro. There's nothing "notable" around it. The area was used by brazilian army and there's a possibility that some of the soil is contaminated. There's also some people living there and an issue with cutting the trees in and around it. An endless list of problems. So there's no guarantee of nothing, basically.

The track doesn't look that bad, on the paper, at least:

One of the earliest 500cc races I remember watching live! Abe was awesome.

Amazing battle for the win.

The very last race was held today, only the track itself and the tower stands still.
For now.

It wasn't much of a road course, but it was one of the very best ovals. Ah well, nothing lasts forever.
