Another beautiful morning, but temps will approach 38C (100F) here today, and will be hotter tomorrow for the race.

Mika Salo has got pole at 2.03.9421 in the Ferrari on this mornings session. Which is expected to be the faster one for the day because of this afternoons expected heat.Next was the Schnieder Benz, the Kelly GTR and the Quinn McLaren. The pacesetting Lambo of Russel from yesterday has been forced to revert to class A and is expected to be a bit slower, added with this afternoons heat.
Jason Bright crashed the Audi on his first flying lap and that car is out for the weekend too. As is the #68 997 of Bilski after a crash on conrod yesterday.

The Sports cars seem to be quicker this year than last though the support classes are slower.Yet the track has been resurfaced. Ray Hislop, Improved Production is about 5 seconds slower than last year, as it seems are the other front runners in the category.
The HQs too are slower than last year, though the record for them goes back to 1997! Though different engine spec is part of that though.

Record is 2.56.0330 set be Peter Holmes in 97.
Last year the HQs did 2 58s which they have got down to in todays race. So not faster than last year. Cars are exactly the same spec. While it does not seem that fast taking into account the chase they are faster than XU1s in 72. carrying 300lbs more and pushing a lot more air. But do about 128mph into the chase!! And a single carb engine on these days unleaded. 3 speed v c/r 4 speed and road tyres v race tyres. So they are actually bloody fast for their lack of spec.

The main event competitors have had their final qualifying. Pole is Maro Engel in the afternoon heat in the Benz @ 2.03.86, Salo from this morning 2.03.9 then the Quinn McLaren which improved too, from the Van Gisbergen Benz.
The Whyatt Ferrari crashed again and is in doubt for the race tomorrow.
The car driven by Eric Bana is 26th and 15 sec off the pace. Though if they avoid the mayhem still may end up top 10.

The Erebus team must be bleeding for money as it seems no sponsors, on the cars that won last year. And on pole this year!

After last year the next thing is how many cars will survive the first couple of hours. Some are reputedly very fragile for 1 hour yet alone 12 and a few drivers seem to think it is a one hour race too. The slow traffic too will be a major problem as there is over 30 sec a lap difference from the fastest to slowest. Plus a huge difference in experience, though the heros seem to hit the amatuers not the other way around!

Yep The record from 97 was swapped a number of times between Peter Holmes and Greg King, these were the days when they were all running 13+:1 comp and running avgas, they now run 98 and have a maximum comp, of around 11:1

I don't know where you got the 2.58s last year, I have been there every year and have mates who race HQs quickest race time last year was 3.00.8 compared to 2.58.1 this year, and bear in mind last year it was cooler as it was at Easter, in 2011 in February and the same sort of heat they running around 3.04

They NEVER used 13-1`. Many were around 12-1 which was too much anyway for the Holden Chamber and head casting. These days they are aprox 10-1. And no arguments please as I was an engine sealer for over 10 years! The Avgas they used to use was far more usefull in those engines though than 98 ULP. Better volatility, and you could use more advance.
I have never sealed Petes engines but from talking to the other sealers at the time his would have been closer to 11-1. Generally about the optimum for a Holden 6. He runs a dyno shop and was very particular with timing and fuel curve. I wish he would do it with his current Commodore!

Potentially silly question alert:

Can these engines be built for qualy pace then rebuilt overnight for endurance, or is that not legal and or physically possible?

My idea being that if they're built to race for 12 hours and are lapping at that pace then it's even more impressive no?

I will  have to pull my old notes out of the shed to be able to say what the exact avgas figures are, but we ran at 36cc chamber, and from memory I thought it was 13:1. I know a number of guys running pretty close to the minimum 45cc with flat tops at zero deck and th 41 though acl head gasket, which I think is over 11:1.

Irrespective of who is right or wrong, the point was the lap record was set back in the avgas days, with more comp and more torque.

I am only a spectator for the 12 hour stuff, but my understanding is that these are the engines that will run (hopefully) for 12 hours. I am quite willing to be corrected on this though :)

I was actually a bit dissapointed with Lowndesy"s times in the last session, I though he may be quicker than he was, considering the time Mika Salo put down in the morning

How many of the teams in a GT race have "real" commerical sponsors anyway?  I would have thought 95% of the stickers would be businesses belonging to the car owners/drivers, or automotive related suppliers.

Anyway those times are incredible!  4 cars under 2:04.3 is very, very impressive.  Great job by Engel, Lowndes, van Gisbergen and Davison.

Awesome racing. Loved watchin SVG chasing down Bernd. The GT3 cars are so much more exciting than the V8 supercars.

Just wow at some of the intense battles going on with the mclaren & merc at the front. especially behind lapped traffic going through the dipper that's nail biting stuff!

3am here and I'm still watching. Still dreaming of seeing LMPs race at Bathurst, that would be utterly batshit crazy, but in the mean time, GT3 is the next best thing. :)

It HAD more cars up until practice and qualifying - four out before the race started.

Lowndes / Bowe / Salo / Edwards Ferrari leads Quinn / Quinn / Kirkaldy / Van Gisbergen McLaren and Davsion / Le Brocq / Crick C63 at 14.50 local (race due to finish at 18.15).

#1 Erebus car (Maro Engel / Bernd Schneider / Nico Bastian) delayed by a stripped hub and six laps behind.

A HUGE hit earlier when the Clearwater Ferrari spun and was hit by the NIssan Skyline GTR. Both drivers are okay.

I'm not happy about the mental image I now have!

And apropos of nothing, those Audi R8s are sex, but the Ferrari is orgasmic.

Dunno about Rast specifically, but there are a lot of Factory Y drivers racing for Manufacturer X in this race.

Nissan GTRs come back seems to be the same as before,,, drive into an accident under waved yellows. 20 sec after the accident!

The Giz was a bit hairy earlier. The incident with Lilly was unfortunate but not Shanes fault and the Salo incident was Salo was a lap down and turned in trying to race him on cold tyres. Not a smart move on Shane part however. But was he fast!! Schnieder was on the pace too.
