So when did engines move from splash and hope to a pump?

This is probably a bit beside the point - but the Austin Seven had an oil pump (from 1922 I think). The odd thing is that the big ends were not pressure-fed but an oil squirter aimed a stream of oil at collectors on each conrod.
You would think if you had an oil pump you might as well pressure feed the bigends.

There were engines with pressure lubrication by 1902. And there were engines using splash in the 1950s. In the meantime there has been every kind of scheme you could imagine, including manual oilers, grease cups, flywheel ring gear as oil slinger, etc.

It makes you wonder, the small block Chev has one of the best oiling systems around [the reason it has been used in motorsport for near 6 decades] yet GM were selling vehicles with splash and dip a year before.
