How? Look identical to me?

Vettel was WDC even if he didn't get past Schumacher., that's one difference.

Another is that there is KERS and DRS now making things much easier.

Another one Schumacher was 2 seconds slower in S2 also the next lap following after being passed by Vettel. Even Schumacher knows that there are times when it's not worth to fight when the car doesn't let you do that, and especially not if it's someone elses fight.

And track conditions at that time were different as well.

I think it's been a great bonus to have had MS back on the grid for the last 3 years with his comeback, mixing it with the current younger generation of up-and-comers. I must admit though I thought he would have taken a win or 2 during this period but it wasn't to be.

Schumacher was actually pretty good in today's race. It was a nice touch, a passing of the torch moment, when he gave the next german legend Vettel his position. And he seemed genuinely happy for Vettel as he congratulated him after the race.

Also enjoyed his battle with Raikkonen, excellent wheel to wheel stuff that only top drivers can manage. He must have some respect for Kimi as he did not nudge him off the track as he later did to Kobayashi on the very last racing lap in his career!, I wouldn't have expected any different.

So goodbye Michael, F1 won't be the same without you.

Thank you for the comeback though it is not successful as many (including myself) anticipated. Should appreciate your guts at this age to take such a decision and giving it a time of 3 years sacrifying his personal life and his reputation in a way.

I think he will be back. I think someone will pick up the phone in the paddock one day, maybe someone will make a quip or a joke about putting him and his zimmer frame in a car in a couple of years time, and all of a sudden both will take a little bit longer to laugh at the idea.

Yeah the clash with KR was pure excellence. People remember how they did the same in 2006 but I for some reason thought of JPM move on MSC from 2001. Great stuff!

MSC contact with Koba is also symbolic in a couple of ways. First in how hard MSC races. Second in how MSC can do clean battles with top drivers but no so clean with newer generation mid fielders in the picture.

Yesterday, he probably said good-bye in the, in my opinion, most beautiful way a racing driver can say good-bye: with outstanding wheel-to-wheel driving.

I'll miss him, simply because he was the best racing driver I've ever seen. Watching F1 as a four year old in 1997, he was the man that captivated me, triggered my love for F1 and, in a way, formed a large part of my childhood. So thanks a lot Michael, enjoy a nice quiet retirement, and stay away from racing bikes this time..

He silenced the critics and lapped his team mate in his last ever drive. He is retiring too early but I guess the motivation for another year at Mercedes simply wasn't there anymore.

That was a great moment. I watched it on the Austrian TV ORF ( which is surprisingly balanced, perhas a reaction to Red Bull Servus TV ) to avoid RAIs Ferrari 1 show and you could feel how an ex-driver like Wurz enjoyed and appreciated that hard but fair battle.

As a life long MS fan I don't regret his comeback not for a moment. His presence on the track was just enough for me.
Bye Michael. And thank you for the joy and high emotions you brought for all those 20 years.

I am sure we'll hear about him. Because he's the kind of person who is always up to something.

So, here we are again. Just like in 2006, I have this feeling that he still had more to offer, that he could have stayed a bit longer. He kept improving and was driving on a higher level now than he did in the beginning of his comeback.

What I liked about his comeback was that he obviously matured as a person.

His last race was a nice finishing touch to a truly remarkable racing career.

He brought Formula 1 to Germany and German drivers into Formula 1. Scenes after the race with him, Vettel and Glock posing for a photo were great to watch.

You will be missed, that is certain

Am I the only person who still secretly hoped for a Schumacher win before the start of the race? It would have been a lovely parting gift. Bernie arranged one for SFW at Barcelona and I hoped he might arrange one for Schumie here.

Anyone think he'll be back as a pundit on the BBC in 2013?

The way he only worked exclusively with German TV media his entire career (I know it was a contract but still) I can't see him working for anyone but. Schumi's English language skills are great but he really is German through and through, that's the feeling I get.

In fact I find him quite abrasive when interviewed by British media.

Well, can you blame Schumacher for that sometimes? Some of the reporters interviews are quite silly.

For me he remains the best Formula 1 driver, and it was really nice to see him race for 3 more years. I hope we could still see couple of kart races with him...

I am a firm believer of that also, but he had a fuel pressure issue, that would have been terrible... Leading Monaco, going to win, then car fails, which is what happened to him in Monaco 2000. It would have been a great victory if he pulled it out in the Mercedes.

Amazing to see again where he came from. Not enough money to buy tyres, start in races etc. and still winning almost everywhere he could. The story in which he won with tyres someone else put in a trash can was indeed funny.

The old Schumacher would have been battling for the title too. This Schumacher wasn't and he stated on TV he didn't want to interfere with a title fight he wasn't involved with. Plus he is obviously on very good terms with Vettel already and didn't want to be involved in denying him a title by crashing into him trying to defend a position that meant nothing to him.

But he did. By gifting the position to Vettel he did interfere, even if it's understandable.

I remember in 1997 the McLaren apparently drivers stayed out of the title fight (had they raced like normal, who know's - MSC and JV may never havbe been close to each other for MSC to move on JV) - in 2008 Massa missed out because the Toyota moved over for Lewham (es, I know different tyres, but like MSC he didn't make it hard..).....(couple of examples off the top of my head)

IMO, you race for yourself and you don't move over for anyone other than your teammate.

Staying out of trouble is also a form of racing for yourself. Not only he avoided an internet explosion [had he collided with SV] but also saved himself time with respect to his direct opponent at the time - Koba.

Fuzzy memory? You should go to sleep earlier mate. Glock fell off the cliff after his dry tyres couldn't cope with an increasing wet track in 2008. I can understand Schumachers decision. It was a very good effort to pull that shitbox back into the points and to go at it in those conditions he would have risked being taken out. That would have created some headlines, Schumacher blamed for countryman Vettel missing out on the title at his goodbye race. And yes, I hoped for more of a fight at that time also!
