Hi All,

I received the following email enquiry, but I am struggling to find detailed information on the South African Drivers Championship at the moment. Can anyone help?

Cheers,

Darren

on the GEL Motorsport information Page I found a list of South African Drivers' Champions written by you. There is a remarke that between 1962 and 1975 this Championship was run under Formula 1 rules. If so way doesn't you include the races in the list of Non-Championship events for that years? If the races that are in this lists the only ones how are the champions selected? As an example I found Dave Charlton as Champion for 1975 but Jody Scheckter and Eddie Keizan had finished South African GP of this year in front of him. Since they are all three South African drivers ther nust have been somethings else. I would be very pleased to get an answer, thank you in advance.

Don't think SAGP counted for SA drivers championship which was based on the national series.I seem to remember keeping championship tables for some years from Autosport reports. If our SA members can't do better I'll dig them out.

Go to the 8W website.
I supplied LOTSS and LOTS of info to Matthys which he has laid out very nicely.

The Matra Cosworth Jean-Pierre Beltoise drove at Killarney in January 1968 was a F2 Matra MS7 Cosworth FVA 1.6 L 4 cyl. With the same car he finished 6th in the 1968 SA GP.

The Jack Pretorius' Lola Ford (winner of 2 races in 1968) was as we already said in another topic (about the Portuguese tracks, including Lorenco Marques, in Mozambique, at that time a Portuguese Colony) not a F1, the Lola T140 SL-140-04 Ford.

The same remark for the Lola Chevrolet of Dave Charlton (1968).

Mozambique GP: maybe also called Copa Gouvernador General.

Thanks for all the information. Rob, you don't happen to have the URL to the info on 8W do you, as I am having problems finding it?

That's because it's on 6th Gear! (As Darren already knows, but I will post the URL here for the rest of you.)

http://www.racer.dem...ear/gp-yby.html

Just the winners, I'm afraid, and pretty much mixed up with all the rest of the winners. BTW, this list needs some sorting out as far as the pre-1920 races are concerned but I'm just getting to that - hopefully with the help of Felix and Hans (who has done a similar exercise which has recently been published by Leif, a fact of course well known to you...).

Some people are never happy...... Here's the follow up e-mail:-

Now I had have a closer look in to the data. The years between
1966 and 1975 are covered in a good way [even if I wish for more
(like positions 2 to 6 or race distances), as it is ever with
collectors like we are]. But in your list the South African Drivers'
Championship was held as F1 events since 1962. Before that I
suppose it was a Formula Libre series. I am interested in both. So
if it is not too much asked, could you please ask your friends for
similar Information for the years from 1953 to 1965? My thanks to you and your friends for what you have done and in advance.

Can anyone.........?

Try the book " Sun on the Grid" by Ken Stewart & Norman Reich. It covers all southern African racing up to 1967,when it was published. It has been reprinted recently,so copies shoud be obtainable. It covers 1st 6 places in all known races.

Darren

Why not point your friend at A Record of South African Formula 1 Racing by Peter McIntosh and Paul Sheldon (publ 1999 no ISBN) for the full results from 1960 to 1975 and old copies of Classic Car Africa who have already covered all the races up to 1960.

Those two publications cover the full period of major South African motor racing.

He describes himself as a 'collector'. There's a big difference between collecting things and researching things. I think what we do on TNF is research - and then exchange our results. Being a 'collector' implies the flow of information is always in one direction - from us to the collector. Is this what TNF should be encouraging?

Regarding his question of the formula... I am certain that SA took on F1 for the 1.5-litre Formula from 1961, and the number of Alfa specials backs this up... before that, possibly FLibre?

Now let's see if he can tell us something....

I believe the 1961-64 SA races were not technically F1 as they allowed underweight ex F.Junior cars to take part.
The two (one on Jan 1 the other late December) SAGPs held in 1960 are very mysterious in that the visiting European aces all brought F2s,but locals were allowed to start in larger vehicles!
