#10 Edgar Wadsworth - Healey, as this is in the Saloon Class it is probably his Healey Elliott FGD 288 which he raced for most of the 50's including at Oulton Park and Goodwood.

See link of auction details in 2010.

http://www.handh.co....ey-elliott/8143

#17 he is also entered in a Porsche, I was aware he has a Denzil but was unaware of the Porsche.

In 1960 he acquired Keith Aitchison's Mk1 Grantura and raced it in the 1961 Birkett. Edit this was John Wadsworth not Edgar.

I am sorry that the Grayford was missed off the bottom of Class 9 on both pages.  By a process of elimination its racing number could have been 79

According to the ACOC, YPL 50 was the first 'factory' Ace-Bristol, chassis BE 109. It was built in 1956.

Here it is as a road test vehicle on 27 April 1956:

https://revslib.stan...q=YPL 50&utf8=✓

It was subsequently modified for racing, so logically the picture of #74 above has to be taken after the above date.

Mike Spence is thought to have raced the car in 1958.

TWENTIETH BRUNTON HILL CLIMB, 12th April, 1959

F.T.D.- J.N. Anstis (#53 A.C. Ace), 29.38 sec

Class 11: 1st- K.N. Rudd (#50 A.C. Ace), 30.97 sec

RGDS RLT

Note Ken Rudd is #74 in the A.C. at the 11th Brunton Hill Climb, 15th April 1956.
Two possible explanations:

The number is a coincidence - he has the same number on a later occasion.

The date is good and the registration was used on more than one Ace.

We cannot be certain.

Grayford, I think I have an entry for the Grayford in 68/69 in a programme here. I need to sort stuff for myself, as I am trying to get back in harness with my own project, so need to find it. Please pm me with your e mail address and I will scan it and send it to you. It may be worth posting it here if it is relevant.

We can be fairly confident that there were 55 Brunton Hill Climbs, during the period 1951-1970.

The last event was won in the wet by Bill House, 1.0 Hillman Imp.

We still have the black holes of events 46, 48, 54:

1967

September 10 (restricted): ???

1968

June 9: ???

1970

June 7: ??? A round of the Castrol-B.A.R.C. Hill Climb Championship.

Any assistance greatly appreciated.

It isn't interesting to see the Petty JAP as a class winner, a car of which I really became aware when it was first at the Revival a few years ago.
Eric Willmott, FJ in 1962, is of course the father of 80s period F3 and now historic racer Adrian.
Thanks for your research
Roger Lund

Eric Willmott Elva FJ, FTD 17 June 1962, 25.42 sec (car painted red)

This was Elva 200-Ford, chassis 200/16.

With thanks to János Wimpffen.

Is this car still around?

I'd be delighted to receive any Brunton material also.

I have the first event at Brunton on 29 July 1951. There may be confusion over the name, as early events were referred to being at Ludgershall.

There was an event scheduled for 24 June 1951, but no evidence that it ever took place. The numbering system of the events suggests that it did not take place.

(I have conjectured that it may have been cancelled due to army manoeuvres, this being during the Korean War.)

See Post 51.

I've never found any evidence of Brunton Hill Climb running beyond 1970.

If it did, where is the proof?

I wonder whether it may have been used as a special stage on a rally at some point?

I've done a scan of the book but can't figure how to paste here so I'm going to mail it to you Rupert.

Regarding use as a rally special stage, I think probably not. The event that is most likely to have used it if it was used is probably the (long since defunct) Vickers Armstrong (Hurn) Car Club Safari Rally. I recall doing it in 1969 or 1970 (as the Westover Safari), when it used Gurston Down (and ran beyond the hill climb finish up on to the B.O.A.T. on the ridge). It also used Collingbourne Forest, very close to Brunton. Both were very short stages by rally standards but it didn't use Brunton that year. Fond memories of changing a head gasket at the side of the road, looking down to Stonehenge. Bournemouth and District Car Club would be about the only place to ask today. I think the Bournemouth Rally had stages in the area in that era or earlier.

With thanks to Paul Grêlé who has been sending me copies of the 750 M.C. Bulletin:

BRUNTON INTER-CLUB HILL CLIMB - 28.6.57.

Following on from last Year's win in the Inter-Club Hill Climb, at

Brunton, we were again invited this year, and after much writing and

telephoning round the Southern half of England, we were able to arrange

four complete teams, plus reserves, every one of whom arrived at the start.

Incidentally, this was one of the largest club entries.

The event was held in brilliant sunshine, and there was an excellent

entry. Drivers who beat previous class records scored plus marks for their

team, while those who failed to reach the record had marks deducted.

A.F. Rivers-Fletcher, driving for the 750 M.C. Team in his immaculate

blue Cooper broke the class record and also the record for the hill bringing

it down to 23.88 secs. This was his first visit to Brunton, and also

incidentally his birthday, so it was a most enjoyable and successful day

for him. Other record breakers from the 750 M.C. were Jack French with

Simplicity, who brought the under 933 c.c. class record down to 29.35 secs,

and H.J. Rose in his Lancia who recorded 29.75 secs, another class record.

The other members of the teams, were S.C. Gray, G.L.F. Waddup,

Norman Davis, Vic Hood, V. Gardner (dvr. S. Aberg), Jim Burry, Tony Lock,

Keith Lloyd and E.G. Burrows. Reserves were P.J. Harding and E.J. Seymour.

Unfortunately two members had to retire but the rest put up very creditable

performances and did very well in the final placings, but the cup was not

to tbe ours this year, and the Gosport A.C. finally took it off with them.

Pit-patter. Condolences to Keith Lloyd, whose very fast Chummy broke

its crank only three miles from Brunton. The disconsolate driver, spent the

rest of the day having to watch the other 750 entrants participate.

Condolences also to E.J. Seymour, who, taking Keith Lloyd's place in the

team had clutch trouble, and had to retire. Stan Gray was observed doing a

little maintenance on the Grayford special, taking up play in a few big

ends. The work appeared to be very successful as the car went extremely

fast, and put up an excellent time. Vic Hood had forsaken his Nippy and

appeared with a new 750 special, which had actually been finished the night

before, and had its first run up to Brunton.

A further Hill-Climb is being held at Brunton on September 15th, and

no doubt many of the above will be there endeavouring to lower the class

record still further. This is certainly a most popular event in the South

and very suitable for 750's and we hope to see many more members there at

future events.

See previous post.

Brunton Briefs

There are four pictures of Brunton Hill Climb in the pictorial section of Motor Sport, June 1957.

They show the meeting on 12 May 1957. Cars featured are the Morgan of J.B. Banbury; the single-seater Cooper 1,100 of David Good;

the A.C. Ace of Alastair Park, #47/48, 29.01 sec; and the #33 Ford-engined Cooper of V.F. Gardiner, 32.54 sec.

Chris Park, son of Alastair Park, tells me the A.C. Ace was RLJ 755. Also ran at Brunton 15 April 1956 as #75/76 shared with his wife Sheila.

C.A.N. May tells us Captain R.L. Woods, Aston Martin: "sprang a surprise at a resurfaced Brunton, 15 April, running second to Tom Sopwith

for Fastest Time of Day despite the presence of hill-record-holder Gordon Parker and such potentially fast men as Trengwainton

record-holder Tom Cunane; a one-time Brunton record-holder, W.L. Cripps; Ken Rudd, in the very rapid A.C.-Bristol; Peter Farquharson's

big yellow Allard, 'Butch' and up-and-coming John Rudd in the ex-Tony Crook Frazer Nash 'Le Mans Replica'."

The Aston Martin of R.L. Woods: "there was a DB3s engine under the bonnet of this otherwise standard DB2 saloon."

According to Racing Sports Cars this was: Aston Martin DB2 #LML/50/199

Lotus, 781 HRE, is here at Silverstone: https://revslib.stan...tem/sh325nc4924

Rupert,

There is a list of RLJ 755's competition history and a photo at Brunton 47/48 in ACE Bristol Racing by John McLelland & Tony Bancroft. It appears to have competed at Brunton 6 times between 1955-57.

The Lotus Mk VI, 781 HRE, belonged to MGD (Douglas) Graham and was first registered on 14th September 1955.  He won his class on 15th April 1956 (see post 152 above) so it is quite likely that the photo of the car was taken on that date.

I have a scanned copy of the entry list for the 16th September 1956 meeting.  Would that be of interest?

Hello

I have been through my notes and sources and I also can't find anything that says later than 1970.

All I can think is that I mis-typed the year and missed it when I was proof reading Motorsport Explorer.  Sackcloth and Ashes

Oh for the chance at a second revised and corrected edition.

fuzzi: You can only make mistakes if you actually do something! I've made a few rickets myself over the years (not too many)!

You have done the motor sport community a great service by publishing your geography lesson.

I hope that we can complete this outline history of Brunton before too long, by filling in the gaps.
See above.

I've looked. Brunton started out as sports and saloons only.

500 c.c. racing cars ran for the first time 16 Sept 1956 (see above).

At some point circa 1958 this escalated to the larger racing cars.

(Looks like the 'big twins' were accepted from 16 Sept 1956, but didn't show up.)

By the end in 1970 we had an F5000 McLaren, with oversized motor, driven by David Good!

Your pic, #112, has to be end fifties/early sixties when the entries exceeded 100 cars.

I have also uploaded to my Flickr account a scan from the club Lotus News page of Sports Car and Lotus Owner from 1956 (not sure what month) showing the Club Lotus Team at the [ 24 June] 1956 meeting:

Thanks very much, Rupert, for the results for the 24th June 1956 Inter-Club Team hill climb.  The original Club Lotus entries were for

Ian Smith in his 1496 cc car registered POP 444,

MGD Graham in his FWA Climax 781 HRE and

Jon Derisley in his sidevalve SNK 6.

P Gresham was a reserve for the team with his sidevalve ULG 3.

From the results (and closer study of the registration of the second car in the photo) it appears that Graham was replaced by Gresham (His initials were JPH, known as Peter).  My comment in a PM to Rupert about the significance of the check shirt is therefore irrelevant.

In the entry list the BARC SW Centre A team consisted off Cripps, Sparrowe and Park in a Tojeiro-Bristol and the BARC SW Centre B team of Sprake, Havard both in Renault 750s and Short in the Lotus Mk X.  Compare the team makeups with the results above.  The scoring system involved comparing the time of each car with the hill record for the class it was running in with points added or subtracted (1 per hundredth of a second difference) so there was scope for a bit of maths and re-allocation to maximise each team's chances...

The mystery of the missing round at Brunton is wrapped up in the Castrol-B.A.R.C. Hill Climb Championship of 1970:

Round 1, April 5th, Brunton

Round 2, April 19th, Harewood

Round 3, April 26th, Loton Park

Round 4, May 24th, Gurston Down

Round 5, May 31st, Pontypool Park

Round 6, June 7th (In pre-season calendar as Brunton, but no mention can be found in either listings or event reports)

Round 7, June 28th, Harewood,

Round 8, July 26th, Gurston Down

Round 9, August 31st, Gurston Down

Round 10, September 20th, Pontypool Park

Round 11, September 27th, Scarborough (described as the 'final round' in the Autosport report)

Best 7 scores to count.

Per Harewood Hill Climb programme, 28 June 1970:
"Today the first stage of the 1970 Championship
concludes as all the first five competitors in the table
will have completed their seven rounds. Henceforth
they can only increase their marks by discarding earlier
and lower scores whilst the drivers with events in hand
continue to climb up the table leading to the final
round at Olivers Mount, Scarborough in September."

So F.T.D went to Mervyn Bartram, Moss Chevron B2 Ford, 23.39?

(Bartram was from York. Car later called Moss Tyres Special.)

Per Allen Brown #126 is Peter Scott-Walter?

Mark Wendon says:

Tony Bayley's JW4 was built specifically for hill climbs.  The chassis was a specifically strengthened version of the JW4 Mk3 and ex-works aluminium panelled to increase torsional stiffness. The car was marketed by the factory with the minimal bodywork you see in the pictures and the chassis was designed for engines of up to 95bhp. This was chassis 7024D which made it a 1967 build and was one of two cars fitted with a 1-litre Vincent Lightning Engine.

See: https://www.mikehayw...ag=brian newton

Dr. A.J. (Tony) Bayley was from Ashford, Kent.

Mercury 4:

Who was #99 "Bosworth"?

A report from 1968 states that the Mercury 4 was being used for sand racing on Jersey:

I don't understand how the organisers chose their Top Ten at the 7th June, 1970 meeting.  I thought that it is usually the ten drivers who have posted the fastest times overall in the class runs who are invited to take the extra runs..

Car 53 in the Top Ten doesn't appear in the class runs and in Class 13 No 85 Bartram's Chevron with 25.88 surely wins the class beating No. 83 Woodward in his Lotus 7 with 27.57?

Yesterday I saw a friend who works in the BARC HQ at Thruxton and he has invited me to have a look at their paper archives and photos.  I will report on anything I find...

Charles, it is often only the drivers registered for a specific championship who are eligible for the "Top Ten Run-off". Therefore anyone who is quicker doesn't get in. However if the non-registered driver has a shot at FTD and the Top Ten Run-off counts for FTD then they are usually allowed to run to "defend their FTD placing".

Charles, You are right #53 appears out of nowhere. (I am wondering if it is a typo for #51?)

AFAIK at many hill climbs you can only win one pot, so for example if you are F.T.D. the next fastest is the class winner.

This would seem to be the case here.

Do you want a copy of the original results sheet?

We are still looking for events at Brunton on 10 September 1967; 9 June 1968 to complete the set.

Good luck at B.A.R.C. HQ - ref hillclimbs I found the B.A.R.C. Gazette up to mid-1967 and a few photographs.

Having said that, my contact was absent that day so they may have other stuff.

P.S. It is possible that somebody eligible for the 'Top Ten' has simply gone home?

Most Clubs don't substitute for example the 11th fastest competitor if one of the Top Ten runners goes home, unless it is in the Championship regulations.

MOTORING NEWS         21st September 1967     Issue 550

Page 20 (rear cover) Brunton Hillclimb

"46th and third hillclimb at the venue in 1967" from the opening paragraph

FTD: Jack Heaton-Rudd (Rudeani) 23.80s

FTD (SW): Mike Miles (Jaguar E-Type) 25.39s

Novice: C. Rennie-Fowler (Welstor-Ford) 28.45s

Ladies FTD: Mrs Elizabeth Miles (Jaguar E-Type) 27.02s

Class Winners:

Tim Rogers (1.0 Mini Cooper S) 26.03s;

John Francis (1.3 Mini Cooper) 25.12s;

Tony Shaw (1.9 Ford Anglia) 25.64s;

Brian Woodifield (1.3 MG Midget) 28.49s;

David Ways (Morgan 4/4) 26.93s;

D. Stevens (Greyford Special) 27.62s;

Robin Skelcher (1.5 Mallock U2 Mk 8 Ford TC) 23.89s;

Spencer Elton (0.5 Cooper Mk 8) 24.30s;

Tommy Elton (1.1 Lotus 22) 24.36s

NB Reading the report there seems to be the usual BARC odd-ball approach to award presentation. In the 500cc class Tommy Elton set the fastest time in a Cooper Mk 10 (23.95s) however because he was in the larger capacity class, which he ‘won’ despite Jack Heaton-Rudd setting a quicker time, second place Spencer Elton got the class award. Also, Mike Miles (E-Type) was the fastest in his class but as he was the South West FTD he didn’t get a class award. Finally, Jack Heaton-Rudd set FTD so didn’t get the Class 10 1st place award as that went to Tommy Elton.

Allow me a small celebration. I now have some information about all events that took place at Brunton.

I have been accumulating data ref Brunton for at least five years.

Visits have included IMRRC in Watkins Glen, New York; Revs in Naples, Florida and B.A.R.C. at Thruxton.

We can now be certain that there were 55 Brunton Hill Climbs, during the period 1951-1970.

I am now compiling a complete history of Brunton (the fifties is done).

Copies will be available on request in due course.

As ever there is still some clean-up to do:

We need to confirm the FTD for the meetings:

- 5 September 1965?

- 20 April 1969?

- 7th June 1970?

Any assistance greatly appreciated.

More from Steve Wilkinson:

MOTORING NEWS, 24th April 1969, Issue 633, Page 6 Brunton Hillclimb

“Swift Again at Brunton” – 50th Brunton hillclimb

“John Surtees was on hand to open the hill in an Alfa 1600 and to present the awards afterwards.” “Altogether the crowd enjoyed fair weather and some fine climbing.”

FTD: Ian Swift (4.7 Swift-Ford V8) 24.54s

FTD (SW): Stan Thomas (1.0 Cooper Mk 8)

Class Winners:

Bryan Jones (1.0 Mini Cooper); John Francis (1.3 Mini Cooper); Roy Hancliffe (1.7 Ford Anglia); Mike Bundy (1.1 Austin Healey Sprite); Keith Kenyon (3.8 Jaguar E-Type); W.A. Ash Cleave (Morris Special); David Hendry (Terrier Mk 6); David Good (2.0 Chevron-BMW B8) 25.25s; David McDougal (1.0 Cooper T72); Sir Nick Williamson (1.6 Brabham-Ford TC BT21C)

NB Once again the odd-ball class awards system was in operation. No times other than FTD was listed in the results however I gleaned David Good’s time from the body of the report. No other class winners times were reported.

[Note: The FTD time of 24.54 secs amends all references above.]

If you have a look at the report Peter is referred to as being both Voight and Voigt. The correct spelling is Voigt. Peter being the chap he is wouldn't think of correcting people if they get it wrong.

Steve, Thanks for pointing this out re spelling. While we are on corrections, Peter Voigt is listed as driving a DRW-Ford on 9 June 1968 at Brunton. A 1969 advertisement says he was driving a DRW-Imp. Did he switch motors? Or is there an error? (The Imp motor later appeared in the Ginetta single-seater.) RGDS RLT

Peter's DRW was always Imp powered. The Ford powered DRWs were different cars.

What Bradbury West said above. A few years back at Prescott there was an attempt to get some of Peter's cars together - they had the Ginetta, Techcraft and Surtees but can't remember if they 'found' the DRW.

I found this intriguing report from the Coventry Evening Telegraph, Monday 12 April 1954:

"HILL CLIMB At the Brunton Hill Climb yesterday, Jim Coplin, of All Spares, Coventry. gave his "special " the first airing of the season and came second in the 1,100 c.c. class. Powered by a much modified Morris 10 engine, he recorded 30.96 seconds for the climb, being beaten by a Fiat, driven by C. Metcalfe, which clocked 30.33 seconds. Mike Hawthorn's Riley was third."

This places Mike Hawthorn at Brunton in 1954.

It must have been a different Mike Hawthorn. On 11th April 1954 the Mike Hawthorn was in Sicily racing in the GP di Siracusa:

http://www.silhouet....4/1954.html#syr

This was the race where he received some nasty burns after he crashed and the car caught fire. Team mate González stopped to help, only for his unoccupied car to slowly roll into Hawthorn’s burning car and itself catch fire.

I remember going to Beaulie with my father and seeing the Patsy Burt car, is it still there? He was some times dissmisive of the compition at some hill climbes but he was pleased with that resuilt, even if his class was a bit thin.
